Match Overview

After being dealt a 2-1 defeat away from home in Norway against Brann in last week’s 1st leg tie of this Europa League play-off, Cypriot hosts AEK Larnaca will be striving to not only overcome this single-goal deficit on Thursday night but will also be aiming to register a win on the night in order to make it through to the group stage of this competition.

AEK had previously accounted for the likes of FK Partizan on penalties along with a 3-2 win on aggregate against Slovenian outfit Celje 3-2 on aggregate and Polish club Legia Warsaw thanks to a 5-3 win over two legs.

Brann will be hoping they can navigate the next 90 minutes in this return leg at the AEK Arena which would see the visitors secure a place in the group stage of this competition and having also collected a 2-1 win away from home at Tromso in the domestic Eliteserien, Freyr Alexandersson’s side will be feeling fairly confident.

However, Brann have managed to capture just two wins in their previous seven away ties in the Europa League along with being involved in two draws and slipping to three defeats as well, so this upcoming return leg looks far from being straightforward for the visitors.

Team News: AEK Larnaca will be without winger Waldo Rubio and midfielder Giorgos Naoum (muscle injuries) as well as Marcus Rohden. Forward Enzo Cabrera will be pushing for a start up front.

Brann will be missing midfield pair Niklas Jensen Wassberg and Sakarias Opsahl through injury.

Everton will be keen to continue the ‘feel-good’ factor at their new Hill Dickinson Stadium on Wednesday night when The Toffees welcome League One visitors Mansfield Town in this EFL Cup 2nd round tie as David Moyes’ side bounced back with a win in the Premier League over the weekend.

A solid 2-0 home win against Brighton for Everton was assisted by new signing and rejuvenated Jack Grealish along with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford who saved a penalty along with keeping a clean sheet. Mansfield Town will also be bringing a fair amount of confidence into this upcoming EFL Cup tie as The Stags go in search of collecting a fifth win on the trot in all competitions; league wins against Exeter City, Blackpool and Leyton Orient have been boosted by a 2-0 win away at Chesterfield in the 1st round of the EFL Cup.

Incidentally, Mansfield Town lost 12 of their 23 away games last season in League One, so Nigel Clough and his side are expected to face a tough shift at the office on Wednesday night.

Team News: Everton are expected to be missing defensive trio of Jarrad Branthwaite, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson while Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye could be rested.

Mansfield Town have doubts over Rhys Oates while the injured trio of Joe Gardner, Deji Oshilaja and Lee Gregory will be absent again.

Jacob Neestrup’s side have already proven their ability to score goals on the European stage, having netted in both legs against Slovan Bratislava in the previous round, while domestically they continue to look dangerous going forward with Mohamed Elyounoussi and Roony Bardghji providing the spark in attack. However, København’s backline has looked far from watertight, with just one clean sheet in their last six games across all competitions.

Basel, meanwhile, arrive in Copenhagen with confidence after extending their unbeaten run in Europe this season. Heiko Vogel’s men showed resilience in the first leg and carry a genuine threat going forward, spearheaded by Thierno Barry and supported by a midfield that likes to get bodies into attacking areas. Much like their hosts, though, Basel’s defensive record is shaky — they’ve conceded in eight of their last nine away fixtures in Europe.

With both sides boasting firepower but lacking defensive solidity, this has all the makings of another open, end-to-end contest where chances are expected to flow freely at either end.

Team News: København are likely to be without midfielder Lukas Lerager through suspension, while Davit Khocholava remains sidelined. Andreas Cornelius could return to the matchday squad after a recent knock.

Basel are missing full-back Sergio López due to injury, but otherwise travel with a strong squad. Liam Millar is expected to feature prominently after an impressive showing in the first leg.
