Newcastle United finally got themselves off the mark with a win in the Premier League as The Magpies registered a 1-0 home victory over struggling Wolves at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe’s side will now be aiming to carry that momentum into European action as they entertain La Liga giants Barcelona on Thursday night.

Prior to that win, Newcastle had been held to draws by Aston Villa and newly promoted Leeds United, with a 3-2 home defeat to league leaders Liverpool sandwiched in between. Their inconsistency makes the prospect of an outright win here look a tall order, though they will take encouragement from their 4-1 triumph over PSG in this competition not so long ago.

The Magpies’ Champions League experience remains limited — just three home games since 2023 — but history suggests goals could be on the cards, with five of their last 10 home ties in the competition seeing both teams find the net.

Barcelona arrive unbeaten in La Liga, having collected three wins and a draw from their first four fixtures. Those victories included a 6-0 thrashing of Valencia, alongside wins over Mallorca and Levante. Hans Flick’s men, beaten 7-6 on aggregate by Inter Milan in last season’s semi-final, will be determined to go even further this campaign.

That said, their away form in the Champions League has been inconsistent, recording five wins, four defeats and a draw from their last 10 away ties. Notably, nine of those 10 matches saw both sides score — a trend that could well continue in the north-east.

Conclusion

Newcastle may be newcomers to Champions League football at this level, but with home advantage and a strong St James’ Park crowd, they should make this a tough night for Barcelona.
