Manchester United make the trip to Blundell Park in the EFL Cup where they take on League Two side Grimsby Town. This is a huge occasion for the Mariners, but the gulf in quality between the two squads is enormous. United are expected to rotate heavily, yet even their second-string XI contains international talent across the pitch.

Grimsby have been inconsistent in League Two and come into this clash as heavy underdogs. Their best hope is to frustrate United early, but sustained pressure from the visitors should eventually tell.

Grimsby Town v Manchester United Team News

Grimsby Town are expected to put out their strongest side as they look to increase the pressure on United boss Amorim. The Mariners have some injury concerns with Jason Svanthorsson and Sam Lavelle both set to miss out. Striker Jaze Kabia is the main danger man, having already scored four goals this season.

Manchester United

United are likely to make changes, with Benjamin Sesko in line for his first start. Bruno Fernandes is expected to operate in a more advanced role, giving Kobbie Mainoo the chance to feature in midfield. Young defender Tyler Fredricson was on the bench against Fulham at the weekend and could be involved again, while Andre Onana may return in goal for his first appearance of the season.

On the injury front, United are still without Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez.

Manchester United to Win

Even with expected rotation, United’s strength in depth should make the difference here. The likes of Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw bring experience at the highest level, while new signing Benjamin Sesko adds a fresh option in attack. Grimsby have only managed two clean sheets in their last ten competitive fixtures and are missing key defensive players such as Sam Lavelle, which leaves them vulnerable against a side with United’s attacking quality. The gulf in class and resources between the two squads is difficult to ignore, and United are strong favourites to progress.

Both Teams to Score – No

United are expected to dominate possession, with Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte likely to control midfield. That should restrict Grimsby to playing on the break and relying heavily on Jaze Kabia up front. The Mariners have struggled in front of goal, averaging less than a goal a game so far this season, while United’s defensive line still features international experience in Maguire and Shaw. With Onana also looking to impress on his return between the sticks, a clean sheet for United looks a strong possibility.

Over 8.5 Corners

United should spend large periods of the game in Grimsby’s half. With Fernandes playing high up the pitch and full-backs like Dalot and Shaw pushing forward, there will be plenty of opportunities to win corners through blocked crosses and deflections. United averaged more than 6 corners per game in last season’s Premier League campaign, and in a match where they are expected to control territory, the corner count should comfortably climb into double figures. Grimsby will likely contribute a few of their own from counter-attacks, making the over line appealing.

Anytime Goalscorer – Benjamin Sesko

All eyes will be on Benjamin Sesko, who is tipped to make his first United start. The striker has built a reputation in Europe for his aerial power and intelligent movement, scoring 14 goals for RB Leipzig last season before his move. Up against a depleted Grimsby defence missing Jason Svanthorsson and Lavelle, he should get plenty of chances inside the box. This is the perfect stage for him to open his account in United colours and make an early impression on Amorim.

Player 2+ Fouls – Jaze Kabia

Kabia is Grimsby’s main attacking threat, with four goals already this season, but he is also likely to be forced into defensive work. Tracking the runs of Shaw and Dalot down the flanks will test his discipline, and he has already picked up multiple fouls in recent outings. Up against quicker, more technical opponents, Kabia is a strong candidate to commit two or more fouls as Grimsby look to contain United’s wide play.
