Reason for Tip

Ballymackie is an eight year old horse who moved to the Murphy yard after the end of the 2024 season. Spent most of 2025 off and returned in a Novice chase at Leicester in December last year. Won that race in nice style and then went on to win lto at Ayr too, both over 2m4f and both wins looked convincing. Has contested much deeper races previously including a Grade 2 novice at Cheltenham in 2024. Still looks very well treated and looks to have a lot left in the tank and so looks nailed on for another big run here. Two wins from two runs since joining the Murphy’s and the yard remain in fantastic form. Sean Bowen has been aboard for the two wins recently and retains the ride again here today. Hattrick looks very much on and Ballymackie could take this with relative ease. Big chance.

⭐ NAP of the Day

Ballymackie (4.15 Wincanton)

Our NAP of the Day goes to the progressive Ballymackie, who looks set to chase a hat-trick at Wincanton this afternoon.

The eight-year-old moved to the Olly Murphy yard after the end of the 2024 season and has made an immediate impact since returning to action. He won a novice chase at Leicester in December before following up with another impressive success at Ayr last time out, both over 2m4f.

Those victories were achieved in convincing style and suggest Ballymackie still has plenty left to offer. The form of those runs looks solid and he has previously competed in deeper races, including a Grade 2 novice at Cheltenham in 2024, which highlights the level of ability he possesses.

Trainer Olly Murphy continues to have his horses in excellent form and the booking of Sean Bowen, who has partnered the horse for both recent wins, only strengthens confidence.

If Ballymackie produces another performance similar to his last two runs, he should prove extremely difficult to beat and looks the standout selection on Thursday’s card.

Reason for Tip

Out of sorts for old yard last year and changed yards at the back end of last year and now resides with the Candlish’s. Solid fourth on debut for the new yard in January but failed to back that up lto at here at this track when a remote seventh. Did race far too freely that day and under a tighter ride is likely to run a better race. Drawn wide but does a lot of racing from the rear so won’t mind slotting in towards the back here. Jockey change today to Lewis Edmunds is no negative and Lewis is riding pretty well at the moment. Drops back into 0-75 company today and can’t be completely ruled off at this level off this mark and so a chance is taken on this five year old bouncing back and into the places at the least.

🎯 Dark Horse

Moonstone Boy (7.30 Newcastle)

Our Dark Horse racing tip comes in the evening meeting at Newcastle with Moonstone Boy, who could offer excellent value at double-figure odds.

The five-year-old had struggled for form with his previous yard but has since moved to the Candlish stable, where signs of improvement have already been shown. He finished a respectable fourth on his debut for the new yard in January before a disappointing run last time out at the same track.

However, that performance can be forgiven as he raced far too freely early on, which ultimately cost him any chance of finishing strongly. With a more restrained ride expected this time, Moonstone Boy could easily produce a much better showing.

Although drawn wide, he tends to race towards the rear which should help him slot in early without too much trouble. Lewis Edmunds takes over in the saddle and the jockey has been riding in good form recently.

Dropping back into 0–75 company, Moonstone Boy looks capable of bouncing back and could easily hit the frame at attractive odds.

Crossgales King – Wincanton

Crossgales King is still searching for his first hurdles victory but has been improving steadily with recent form figures of 75442. His latest run saw him finish an excellent second over course and distance, beaten only by a smart rival.

This contest looks weaker and the six-year-old clearly enjoys racing at Wincanton. With Ciaran O’Shea in the saddle and conditions expected to suit, Crossgales King looks ready to go very close.

Safe Destination – Haydock

Safe Destination arrives here after a rare below-par effort at Fakenham, where he was pulled up. However, his previous form of 3126 shows he is usually a consistent performer and remains on a workable handicap mark.

The trip and ground conditions should suit perfectly and in what appears a very open race, the experienced eight-year-old could easily bounce back to form for the Twiston-Davies team, with Sam Twiston-Davies booked to ride.

The Thames Boatman – Lingfield

The Thames Boatman started the year strongly with a win in a Class 3 race at Lingfield in January. His last two performances have been underwhelming but both runs came with valid excuses including a poor draw and trouble in running.

Now just 2lb higher than his winning mark and dropping back into Class 4 company, he looks well treated. Drawn perfectly in stall 1 and with talented jockey Billy Loughnane aboard, he looks a major contender.

Nikovo – Newcastle

Nikovo has been knocking on the door recently with form figures of 2nd, 3rd and 2nd across his last few starts. His most recent run saw him finish close up in a tightly bunched finish and he lines up here off the same mark.

The six-year-old also won this race last year which shows his liking for the track. With Jason Hart back in the saddle and riding well at present, Nikovo could be primed for another big run.
