The superstar Ombudsman defends his crown in the Group One Prince of Wales Stakes at Royal Ascot. The highly successful John and Thady Gosden trained five year old is a top class middle distance performer with an outstanding record of eight wins from eleven starts. He enters the race on the back of a gutsy victory in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown last month, where he successfully defied a seven pound penalty to beat Gethin. Ombudsman loves the good to firm turf at Ascot and holds supreme track and trip credentials. He faces a formidable opponent in the shape of French Arc winner Daryz, which promises to make this a blockbuster clash of the meeting. However, Ombudsman is a highly professional, battle hardened champion who does not waste energy at all and is fully primed for another massive performance under jockey William Buick and is expected to do the business.

Bridgets Baby gets the vote as our NAP of the Day after producing a much-improved effort at Leicester on her latest start. The daughter of Cable Bay finished a clear second over five furlongs and now drops into a very modest four-runner Class 6 contest at Lingfield.

Tony Carroll’s filly appears to have found her ideal conditions and, if she can reproduce the level of form shown last time out, she looks the one they all have to beat. With confidence growing and the opposition looking beatable, this looks an excellent opportunity to finally shed her maiden tag.

Aquifolia runs in the CopyBet Handicap Hurdle at Worcester, looking to secure her very first career victory. The experienced trainer Neil Mulholland trained five year old mare has yet to find the winners enclosure in eighteen starts overall, but she has shown decent glimpses of ability over hurdles, including a runner up finish at Fontwell last summer. She showed signs of returning to form when finishing a respectable fourth over this course and distance last month, beaten seven and a half lengths behind Saccary. Running off a workable mark of eighty four, she is aided by the useful seven pound claim of capable regular jockey Harriet Tucker. While she needs to show more consistency and put everything together to defeat some of her more in form rivals, Aquifolia is clearly capable on her day and could quite easily sneak a win if building upon recent efforts.

Charlie Appleby and William Buick are always a combination to respect at Ascot, and while the Britannia Stakes is notoriously difficult to win, this unexposed son of Blue Point still has plenty of room for improvement. If he handles the occasion, he has the ability to outrun his odds.

Partnered again by jockey Sean Houlihan, she is a solid contender who should appreciate the good ground conditions at Worcester, making her a highly respectable and fully capable participant in this somewhat challenging racing division on Wednesday afternoon.

Montezuma lines up in the Hamilton sprint handicap with solid credentials. The Jim Goldie trained four year old gelding has shown a strong liking for five furlongs this spring, securing a win and two runner up finishes at Musselburgh during April and May. Although he had a disappointing outing over six furlongs at this track on his penultimate start, his subsequent fifth place finish in a competitive seventeen runner handicap over five furlongs at Thirsk suggests he is quickly back on the right track. Returning to the minimum distance of five furlongs is a major positive, and regular jockey Paul Mulrennan remains on board. While he needs to prove he can handle the Hamilton gradients better than last time, his overall speed and proven form over the distance make him a noteworthy and capable competitor who is fully primed to run a solid race in Scotland today.
