Champion Stakes time here in the 4.05 at Ascot and the stand out pick is Ombudsman. Ombudsman has shown himself to be one of the stars of this year with an emphatic win in the Prince of Wales. Delacroix had his number in the Eclipse at Sandown but that result was reversed in very nice style when Ombudsman dominated them all in the Group 1 international at York lto when winning by over 3 lengths. He looks a big star and has proven himself on numerous occasions. Obviously there can be risks attached in these big races. Gosden yard in solid form at the moment and Buick naturally retains the ride on this boy. Ombudsman has set some blistering figures, particularly lto and if firing on all cylinders may leave this field behind him once more.

Champion Stakes day brings together some of the classiest horses of the season, and Ombudsman looks the one they all have to beat. The Gosden star has been a revelation this year, winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes before finishing second in the Eclipse, and then dominating the Juddmonte International at York in emphatic fashion.

He’s still progressing, and despite a deep field, Ombudsman’s turn of foot and relentless cruising speed make him the clear standout. William Buick retains the ride, and the Gosden yard are in fine form. This is his chance to stamp his authority as the season’s leading middle-distance performer.

Made some progression on first three starts but flopped a little on handicap debut lto when 7th at Ffos Las which is probably a big reason for the odds today. However, we can almost discount that, has shown ability and that trip was just too far and on this drop back in trip on only second handicap start should go much better. Is capable of much more than that last run showed and outrunning the odds here today would not be a shock. Camzara is one of the most unexposed horses in the field and is from a good yard with a good record here. Decent booking in Pat Cosgrave and in this rather weak race, this three year old has a better chance than the odds are displaying at the moment.

Camzara is a lightly-raced three-year-old who failed to fire last time at Ffos Las, but that was over an unsuitable trip, and she’s far better than the form suggests. Dropping back to her ideal distance and returning to the all-weather could unlock improvement, and the Boughey yard knows how to get them firing at Wolverhampton.

Pat Cosgrave takes the ride, and with a kinder draw this time around, she looks capable of outrunning her odds in a fairly open contest.

Showed great progression in the last few months with form of 73314. The fourth last time out was excusable as he was sent over a longer trip which didn’t suit. Returns back to preferred distance today and is a major player in this line up. Represents a top yard who are running well and has a good jockey booked in Greatrex. Jockey in good current form and has a very solid strikerate on Beckett trained horses. Thosewerethedays has a plum draw to get out quick and take up a prominent position and has the ability to make all here off a mark 1lb lower than his win two starts ago. Big chance.

Relatively consistent type who is a proven winner but fell off slightly in last few runs. Has made the switch to the powerful and inform Owen yard and runs for new yard for the first time today. Remains nicely handicapped and is on a very workable mark. Trip and ground are ideal and the yard are in very strong form currently and historically enjoy this course. One of the best in the business aboard in Sean Bowen who needs no introduction, his figures and winrate are outstanding and he rides well here at Stratford too. Not a strong race and Sassified should take this quite comfortably on yard debut.

Hattrick seeking four year old Native Warrior has been a force to be reckoned with this year with form of 21311 including two wins at this track on last two starts. Doesn’t seem to be slowing down, every race Native Warrior is putting out a little more and getting the job done and this race looks another chance at doing so. Big field handicap but he’s no stranger to them and knows what lies ahead. Top yard having a great year and has a great jockey aboard in James Doyle. Odds are likely to shorten from 9/2 a bit i think and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him go off around 3/1 so there’s a little value on the early price. Looks a likely winner.

Pretty open race here in the 8.30 Wolverhampton and one of interest is the three year old Telepathic from the Crisfords. Highly reliable type bar penultimate start where ground can be blamed as aside from that run his form is 2143 since July and looks a major threat here in this race back down in grade. Slight question over the slightly further trip today but seems to have a good engine and on breeding this trip is within range. Represents a major yard with a good record here and has a talented apprentice aboard taking off 3lb. Great chance to return to winning ways.
