Reason for Tip

Expensive filly at 350,000gns and was clearly green on debut here back in October when slowly away and unsettled. Very nicely bred youngster who is related to the likes of Canberra Legend and is a very smart prospect. Not unusual for the Appleby horses to take a huge step forward on second start and given the greenness on show on debut, it could be a dramatic leap. Runs the same trip which seems positive and looks capable of leaving this field comfortably behind today. Top jockey aboard in Billy Loughnane who is no stranger to success here and when he’s ridden for the Appleby yard in the last two years, they’ve combined to win 43% of races. Looks the winner.

Carnival Queen is a beautifully bred filly who cost 350,000gns and shaped with plenty of promise on debut here back in October. She was noticeably green that day, slowly away and unsettled, but that effort is easily forgiven given the profile of this Appleby runner.

It’s very common for horses from this yard to take a significant step forward on their second start, and with the greenness already out of the way, she looks primed to improve markedly. The trip remains the same, conditions are ideal, and Billy Loughnane retains the ride — a jockey who boasts an excellent strike-rate at this venue.

When Loughnane rides for the Appleby yard, they have combined to win 43% of races over the last two seasons, which is a huge statistic in this context. Carnival Queen looks to hold a clear class edge over today’s rivals and is taken to justify favouritism.

Reason for Tip

Wide open large field race this 1.38 and some bookies paying 5 places and one who looks set to compete for one of them is four year old Jack The Boss from the McCain yard. Won on debut in a junior hurdle at Wetherby and given he refused on seasonal debut this year, has only ran once this season lto at Sedgefield and clearly needed the run. Can put a line through that performance and this boy is likely to strip much fitter today, clearly has ability which he’s already shown and looks to have a solid reasonable chance in this on handicap debut. Yard going alright and a good booking in Theo Gillard. Capable of a big run and we may see that today.

This is a wide-open handicap with several bookmakers paying five places, and Jack The Boss looks overpriced at 16/1. A winner on debut in a junior hurdle at Wetherby, he showed ability early in his career and is far better than recent form suggests.

He refused on seasonal debut but returned lto at Sedgefield where he clearly needed the run. That effort can be forgiven, and he should strip much fitter today making his handicap debut off a workable mark. The McCain yard are ticking along nicely, and Theo Gillard is a strong booking in races of this nature.

With proven ability and expected improvement, Jack The Boss could easily outrun his odds and looks a solid each-way contender at a big price.

Five year old with three starts under his belt and form of 821. Got up to win lto when making all at Warwick in May. Obviously has a break to contend with but all runs so far have been a couple of months apart and seems to go well fresh, yard also know how to ready them. Definitely not seen the best of this unexposed youngster yet and he’s taken to progress again here and looks a major threat in this field. Debut at Haydock today but both ground and trip are fine and represents a major yard with a good record here. Tristan Durrell has really been proving himself of late and gets the ride, lots to like and a likely winner.

Bad is a six year old from the Pauling yard who has impressed on a number of occasions recently. Has won twice at Kempton since March this year and returned on seasonal debut after a long break to grab that second win there. Ran a very good race in the Paddypower gold cup at Cheltenham lto and was only beaten by the hill really. Drops back in trip slightly here to a preferred trip and to a course he enjoys. Yard are in good form and Ben Jones gets the ride. Bad is generally pretty consistent over this trip and will make the running and is largely clean over the fences. Big chance, looks primed to take this.

Four year old Mondo Man has yet to win over hurdles in the four runs over them, however he returned for seasonal debut at Lingfield lto and was only beaten by a very smart horse. Has contested Grade 1’s and 2’s and he remains a promising type who has to be taken seriously today. Should strip fitter for the run out last time and gets an ideal trip and ground combination today. Has ran here once before over hurdles and was a creditable second. Yard having a very successful spell and Mondo Man is taken to continue that success and win this.

Reason for Tip

Three year old who took time to get going but she finally got up after 13 races to win lto at Kempton. Doesn’t have the best course form hence the price and the return here is a question mark but it’s not unusual for young fillies to kick on for their first win and that’s what Maywedance is taken to do. This isn’t a strong race, the yard are in great form and this filly has a top jockey aboard today in Hector Crouch who has a great record here. She ran a little more prominently than normal when winning lto and so expecting a similar tactic here. Good chance.

Cobblers Boy remains very unexposed with just three career starts and form figures of 821. He made all to win at Warwick lto and looks the type to progress again. Although he returns from a break, his runs are usually spaced and he has shown he goes well fresh.

The Skelton yard know how to have them ready, conditions look ideal, and Tristan Durrell continues to impress in the saddle. A major threat in this field.

Jockey: Ben Jones

Bad has been a model of consistency, winning twice at Kempton before running a huge race in the Paddy Power Gold Cup lto at Cheltenham. He was only beaten by the hill that day and now drops back slightly in trip to a more suitable distance.

He enjoys Ascot, jumps well, often makes the running, and represents a yard in good form. Ben Jones retains the ride and everything points to another big performance.

Mondo Man

3.35 Ascot – 11/4
Trainer: Gary & Josh Moore
Jockey: Caoilin Quinn

Mondo Man has yet to win over hurdles, but his ability is undeniable. He was only beaten by a smart rival on seasonal return at Lingfield and should strip fitter for that run.

Previously competing in Grade 1 and Grade 2 company, he now finds himself in a very winnable contest. He’s already run well at Ascot and today’s conditions look ideal. Big chance.

Maywedance

8.15 Wolverhampton – 5/1
Trainer: Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies
Jockey: Hector Crouch

Maywedance finally got her head in front lto at Kempton and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see her kick on now confidence is gained. This is a weaker race and she has a top jockey booking in Hector Crouch, who has an excellent record at Wolverhampton.

Expected to race prominently again and has every chance of following up.
