Chapecoense return to Arena Condá desperately searching for a positive result as they continue their fight against relegation, but the visit of title-chasing Flamengo represents one of the toughest tests in Brazilian football.

The Santa Catarina club have endured a difficult campaign since returning to Serie A and currently sit bottom of the table with just nine points from their opening 18 matches. Their struggles continued after the World Cup break when they slipped to a 2-0 defeat away to Bahia in a rearranged fixture, extending a run that has left them with a mountain to climb during the second half of the season.

Stability has been in short supply throughout the campaign. Rafael Lacerda became the club’s third head coach of the season following Fabio Matias’ dismissal in May and faces the difficult task of rebuilding confidence while integrating several new arrivals after a busy mid-season transfer window.

The departures of leading scorer Walter Clar, midfielder Jean Carlos and goalkeeper Leo Vieira have forced further changes, with Max Alves arriving on loan from Cuiabá and Franco Rossi joining from Toluca. Both players are still adapting to their new surroundings, leaving Lacerda with limited time to mould a settled side.

The new manager’s immediate priority has been tightening a defence that has conceded close to two goals per game this season. Chapecoense have often competed well in spells but have lacked the defensive resilience needed to earn valuable points, making home fixtures increasingly important in their battle for survival.

Despite their league position, Arena Condá remains a difficult venue, with supporters expected to produce another passionate atmosphere in the hope of inspiring an upset.

Flamengo, meanwhile, travel south in entirely different circumstances.

Leonardo Jardim’s side sit second in the Serie A standings with 34 points from 17 matches and remain firmly in the hunt for another league title despite trailing leaders Palmeiras by seven points.

The Rio giants are also competing strongly on multiple fronts, having reached the last 16 of both the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil. Jardim has quickly established an exciting, attack-minded side capable of challenging for silverware across every competition.

The World Cup break appears to have benefited Flamengo, who enjoyed an unbeaten pre-season schedule that included lifting the Algarve Trophy after impressive performances against River Plate, Lausanne and Benfica before defeating Olimpia 4-2 in Brasília.

Pedro continues to lead the attack superbly and remains Flamengo’s biggest goal threat, while experienced midfielders Erick Pulgar and Jorginho provide composure and control through the middle of the pitch.

History also points firmly towards the visitors. Flamengo have won 11 of the previous 16 meetings between these clubs and have consistently demonstrated the quality gap separating the two sides over recent seasons.

While Chapecoense will undoubtedly battle throughout, Flamengo possess significantly greater squad depth, attacking quality and momentum heading into the second half of the campaign.
