Burnley v Liverpool Match Preview

Burnley have surprised a few people in the early moments of the season, being relatively competitive apart from the opening day. A 3-0 opening day defeat to Tottenham could have easily spiralled a period of bad results, but a positive win against Sunderland and a competitive matchup against Manchester United in which they only lost to a last minute penalty, shows that Burnley do have more of a competitive squad than the last time they found themselves in the premier league. They will be looking to sure up a little more defensively, which was a standout feature of their play in the Championship, with just 1 clean sheet and 6 goals conceded this season.

Liverpool on the other hand have been less than convincing in any of the 3 games played so far, yet find themselves top of the table, 3 wins from 3 and tough games away to Newcastle and Home to Arsenal out of the way. Arne Slot will be slightly relieved considering the level of performances, but recency bias leads us to suggest that they are figuring it out. It is hard to overlook the fact that Liverpool have revamped their entire squad in the last transfer window. A new RB, LB, STx 2, a creative 10 in Wirtz, it naturally will take time for the team to adjust and find the balance needed to continue their success from last season. Against Arsenal last time out. Liverpool were secure at the back and allowed Arsenal minimal chances, showing that when they need to be, they can be secure, mainly owing to Virgil Van Dijk’s leadership and superb performances so far this season. The addition of Alexander Isak is going to add a further dimension to their squad, although it is yet to be seen whether he will feature of in what capacity Liverpool fit Salah, Wirts, Isak, Ekitike and Gakpo all in the same team.

Liverpool will be looking to make it 4/4 wins against Burnley and ultimately, their fire power should be too much for a Burnley side that has conceded 6 goals in 3 games. The home crowd could make it difficult, but we expect Liverpool to get the job done here.

Mohammed Salah to score
Salah’s performances have been a little underwhelming so far this season, with the emphasis being taken off him with the addition of Wirtz, Ekitike and Gakpo filling the void left from Luis Diaz. However, you can never keep Salah off the score sheet for too long and his shots have been deserving of more goals. Salah has typically struggled against Burnley, but we fancy him to put that right this week.

Cody Gakpo 2+ Shots on Target
Cody Gakpo has probably been Liverpools best player this season but due to him being quite a quiet and unspoken person on the pitch, he goes a little under the radar. He has been intergral to all 3 wins so far this season and his trademark cut in from the left and shoot trait is becoming almost unstoppable. In a game where Liverpool should dictate possession, Gakpo could easily find himself having a couple of shots on target.

Liverpool are a free scoring side at the best of times and have proven so far this season, they have the potential to score at any moment. 2 goals against Palace, 4 against Bournemouth, 3 against Newcastle and 1 against a tough Arsenal backline.
