Argentina v Cape Verde Preview

Defending world champions Argentina head into the knockout stages looking every bit the team to beat after navigating the group phase with maximum points, while Lionel Scaloni’s experienced squad continue their pursuit of back-to-back World Cup triumphs.

La Albiceleste have once again demonstrated the winning mentality that has defined their recent golden era. Since losing to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semi-final, Argentina have developed into one of international football’s most dominant forces, lifting the Copa America twice before conquering the world in Qatar.

That remarkable consistency has continued in North America, with Scaloni’s men winning all three group-stage matches to finish top of their section. Alongside France and co-hosts Mexico, Argentina were one of only three nations to complete a perfect group campaign, underlining why many still regard them as favourites to retain the trophy.

At the centre of everything remains Lionel Messi. Now 39 years old, the Argentine captain continues to defy expectations and has already scored six goals in the tournament, matching Kylian Mbappe despite playing one game fewer. His influence extends well beyond goals, with his movement, vision and leadership continuing to elevate those around him.

However, Argentina are far from a one-man team. Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, Enzo Fernandez and Alexis Mac Allister provide world-class support throughout the spine of the side, while Rodrigo De Paul remains the driving force in midfield.

Their reward for topping the group is a fascinating Round of 32 clash against tournament surprise package Cape Verde.

Making their World Cup debut, the Blue Sharks have already written themselves into the history books by becoming the only one of the tournament’s four debutants to reach the knockout rounds.

Bubista’s side have done so through organisation, discipline and remarkable defensive resilience rather than free-flowing attacking football. They frustrated Spain into a goalless draw in their opening match before battling back from behind to earn an entertaining 2-2 draw against Uruguay. Another disciplined defensive display against Saudi Arabia secured the point they required to progress.

Although Cape Verde have been the lowest scorers among the remaining 32 teams, they have also proven exceptionally difficult to break down. Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has been one of the standout performers of the tournament, while Logan Costa and the experienced defensive unit have consistently frustrated higher-ranked opposition.

The challenge now becomes even greater against arguably the tournament favourites.

Cape Verde’s compact defensive structure may keep Argentina at bay for periods, but containing Messi, Lautaro Martinez and company for a full 90 minutes represents an altogether different proposition.

Portugal v Croatia Preview

Portugal’s reward for reaching the knockout stages is a heavyweight European showdown against perennial World Cup overachievers Croatia, with Roberto Martinez’s side knowing that their performances must improve if they are to fulfil their ambitions of lifting the trophy.

Despite entering the tournament as one of the favourites, Portugal finished second in Group K after collecting five points from their three matches. A frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opener immediately placed the pressure on Martinez’s men before they emphatically responded with a 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan, inspired by a Cristiano Ronaldo brace.

However, there were fresh concerns in their final group fixture as Portugal laboured to a goalless draw with Colombia. Although qualification had already been secured, they struggled to impose themselves for long periods, allowing Colombia to register 24 attempts on goal while producing little attacking fluency themselves.

That inconsistent group-stage campaign has left Portugal on the more difficult side of the draw, where potential meetings with Spain, Belgium, France and Morocco could await should they continue progressing through the competition.

Nevertheless, there are reasons for optimism. Portugal remain unbeaten in their last eight internationals, winning five of those matches while conceding just four goals. More importantly, Martinez possesses one of the deepest squads in the tournament, blending experienced leaders such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes with emerging stars including Joao Neves, Vitinha and Nuno Mendes.

History also offers encouragement. Portugal eliminated Croatia during the knockout stages of Euro 2016 before eventually lifting the trophy, despite entering those knockout rounds after another underwhelming group-stage campaign.

Croatia, meanwhile, continue to prove why they are among international football’s most reliable tournament performers.

Having reached the 2018 World Cup Final before finishing third in Qatar four years later, Zlatko Dalic has once again guided his nation into the knockout rounds despite a difficult start.

The Vatreni were beaten 4-2 by England in their opening fixture but recovered impressively, defeating Panama before edging Ghana 2-1 to finish second in Group L.

Veteran captain Luka Modric continues to defy time, becoming the oldest player ever to register a World Cup assist when he created Nikola Vlasic’s late winner against Ghana. His composure, alongside Mateo Kovacic’s energy and Josko Gvardiol’s defensive quality, ensures Croatia remain one of the tournament’s most tactically disciplined teams.

However, Croatia’s recent record against elite opposition raises concern. All four of their defeats across the last 16 internationals have come against higher-ranked nations, suggesting they still struggle when facing football’s very best.

Head-to-head history also favours Portugal, who have won seven of the previous 10 meetings between the nations and five of their last six competitive encounters.

With two technically gifted midfields and plenty of tournament experience on both sides, this promises to be one of the standout ties of the Round of 32.

Melvin Udall

J: D Egan T: Grace Harris
Race Winner
16/1

Reason for Tip

Melvin Udall looks to bounce back to his best in the 8.00 at Newbury today. Trained by Grace Harris, the talented 4yo gelding showed exactly what he is capable of when making a winning seasonal debut at Doncaster in March, staying on strongly to defeat a competitive fifteen-runner field over this seven-furlong distance. While his subsequent efforts on turf at Thirsk and on the all-weather at Kempton were somewhat below par, he remains a highly capable performer on his day. He returns to his preferred turf surface today on a fast track that should suit his running style, and the good to firm ground is expected to bring out his absolute best. With class-act jockey David Egan booked to ride and his handicap mark of 80 looking highly competitive, Melvin Udall has the raw talent to bounce back and mount a major bid at a big price.

Gunnery Sergeant

J: Sean Bowen T: Gordon Elliot
Race Winner
7/4

Reason for Tip

Gunnery Sergeant is a fascinating Irish raider who commands serious respect in the 3.18 at Perth today. Trained by the powerful Gordon Elliott stable, the 6yo gelding travels over to Scotland to make his highly anticipated handicap chase debut. While he has mixed hurdles and fences recently, his best form includes consecutive runner-up finishes in competitive Irish maiden hurdles at Fairyhouse and Downpatrick earlier this year. He already has useful experience over fences from a pair of beginners’ chases, and today’s mark of 108 looks very reasonable for his handicap bow. Elliott enjoys an exceptional strike rate when sending runners to Perth, and booking the services of top-tier jockey Sean Bowen is a massive statement of intent. Stepping up to a preferred distance of two and a half miles on good ground, Gunnery Sergeant is fully primed to launch a highly serious and determined challenge today and looks a likely winner.

Reason for Tip

The Tom Dascombe trained Yahaira lines up in the 2.00 at Nottingham today with live credentials. This highly promising 2yo filly got off the mark on her fourth career start last month, putting in a gritty performance to land a competitive six-furlong novice event at Newbury. Showing great determination, she made all the running and stayed on tenaciously under William Cox to win by a neck on good to firm ground. Today, she makes her highly anticipated nursery handicap debut off a workable initial mark of 69, with Cox retaining the ride. Her trainer is historically renowned for his excellent record with young handicappers in this sphere, making her a truly formidable contender despite strong opposition from Jack Channon’s Innichen. Boasting winning experience over this trip and likely to appreciate the quick turf, Yahaira represents a highly solid and very positive option to mount another bold bid from the front today.

Ravenscraig Castle

J: Danny McMenamin T: I Jardine
Race Winner
4/1

Reason for Tip

Ravenscraig Castle returns to one of his absolute favourite hunting grounds in the 2.48 at Perth today. The versatile 8yo grey gelding, trained by Iain Jardine, is a proven course-and-distance winner over hurdles at this particular venue, having tasted sweet success here last summer. He showed he retains plenty of enthusiasm and form when finishing a highly encouraging third of twelve over this track and trip last month under today’s jockey, Danny McMenamin. On that occasion, he traveled smoothly and chased the leaders home, beaten just over four lengths. Dropped one pound in the weights to a very attractive mark of 105, he looks beautifully treated in this small six-runner field today. While Jennie Candlish’s Pergamon represents a formidable short-priced rival, Ravenscraig Castle’s robust course form, reliable jumping, and optimal good ground conditions give him a very good chance to deliver another extremely competitive and prominent performance today.

Campani

J: D C Costello T: D M Simcock
Race Winner
2/1

Reason for Tip

Campani has a fantastic opportunity to get back to winning ways in the 4.50 at Yarmouth today. Trained by David Simcock, this consistent 4yo gelding has performed with credit this season, starting his year with a solid victory over seven furlongs at Chelmsford in January. He backed up that performance with an encouraging third-place finish over today’s course and distance in May, keeping on well despite testing soft ground. Reverting to good to firm turf today should play directly to his strengths, as his pedigree indicates a clear preference for a quicker surface. Stripping fitter for that recent run and remaining on a highly competitive handicap mark of 56, he looks perfectly poised to mount a major challenge in this seven-runner field under Dougie Costello.

Avalon Queen

J: Jason Watson T: R A Teal
Race Winner
6/1

Reason for Tip

Avalon Queen is an exciting prospect lining up in the 6.50 at Newbury today. The Roger Teal-trained 2yo filly made a highly promising racecourse debut over six and a half furlongs at this track last month, finishing a commendable fourth in a strong twelve-runner maiden. Although she showed signs of greenness, she stayed on with real encouragement to be beaten just three lengths on quick ground. Sired by Masar and out of the Group 2-winning mare Morgan Le Faye, she possesses an outstanding pedigree and is open to significant physical and mental improvement. While dropping back to a bare six furlongs today might test her speed, her natural talent and debut experience make her a fascinating contender. Ridden by Jason Watson today, the talented Avalon Queen is fully expected to take another major step forward and should mount an incredibly formidable challenge.

Match Preview: 24 Aug 16:30 – Fulham v Manchester United (Premier League)

Venue: Craven Cottage
Broadcast: Sky Go UK, Sky Sports Premier League, Sky Sports Ultra/Main Event

Match Overview

Having earned a solid point in last week’s season opener down on the south coast in a 1-1 draw against Brighton, Fulham now return to the home surroundings of Craven Cottage on Sunday afternoon as they welcome Manchester United along the Thames.

With three pre-season wins under their belts against Nottingham Forest, Al Ittihad and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively, Marco Silva’s side will be feeling positive about their chances against United, especially as The Cottagers have won each of their last two home games on the trot.

Manchester United faced a tough proposition in the shape of Arsenal last week despite holding home advantage at Old Trafford and the Red Devils were unable to avoid defeat to The Gunners as they went down in a 1-0 loss. That result now makes it just one win from their last five competitive matches overall.

Last season was definitely one to forget for United manager Ruben Amorim and his side, who registered an extremely poor 15th place finish in the Premier League table whilst also managing just four wins in their 19 away games. This could therefore be a tricky outing to the nation’s capital for the visitors.

Team News:

  • Fulham: Marco Silva has fitness concerns over defenders Ryan Sessegnon and Antonee Robinson. Rodrigo Muniz is pushing for a start up front and could partner Raul Jimenez.

  • Manchester United: Still without Lisandro Martinez (knee) and Noussair Mazraoui (hamstring). Doubts remain over whether Andre Onana will return in goal.

Prediction: Fulham Double Chance 🔑

Match Preview: 24 Aug 16:15 – Toulouse v Brest (French Ligue 1)

Venue: Stadium de Toulouse
Broadcast: Ligue 1 Pass

Match Overview

Sunday afternoon’s hosts, Toulouse, produced an encouraging start to the new Ligue 1 season with a 1-0 win away at Nice. Manager Carles Martínez will be urging his players on to repeat the feat as they prepare for the visit of Brest.

Toulouse ended last season strongly, winning two of their final three games against Angers and Saint-Etienne. Victory this weekend would see them notch up a fourth straight Ligue 1 win – momentum is firmly in their corner.

Brest, meanwhile, had to settle for a point in a six-goal thriller at home to Lille, drawing 3-3 in an entertaining but defensively shaky performance. Eric Roy will be wary of his side’s fragility at the back.

The visitors did secure a 9th-placed finish last term, but their away form remains a concern, with 10 defeats in 17 games on the road. This trip to Toulouse looks a difficult test.

Team News:

  • Toulouse: Still without injured quartet Ilyas Azizi, Abu Francis, Rafik Messali and Niklas Schmidt. However, the squad’s overall fitness has improved.

  • Brest: Eric Roy has a full squad available, with midfielder Kamory Doumbia the standout threat.

Prediction: Toulouse win ✅

TipMans Final Word

Sunday serves up two fascinating fixtures across Europe, and there looks to be real betting value in combining them. Fulham are more resilient at Craven Cottage than many give them credit for, and with Manchester United struggling for form, the Double Chance on the hosts feels like the sensible angle.

Over in France, Toulouse are building momentum and with Brest’s away record raising question marks, backing the home win looks the standout play. Put together, the 3.50 Double gives punters a strong mix of defensive solidity from Fulham and attacking form from Toulouse.

⚽ Two games, two strong angles, and a price worth taking — this Sunday Double looks well worth adding to your betslip.

Reason for Tip

Egypt have been one of the surprise packages of the tournament and enter this Round of 32 clash full of confidence after winning Group G. Hossam Hassan’s side collected seven points from their three group matches, beginning with a draw against Belgium before beating New Zealand 3-1 and securing top spot with victory over Iran. Mohamed Salah has led from the front, while Omar Marmoush has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, providing pace, creativity and goals from the left side of the attack. Reuters highlighted Egypt’s excellent organisation and clinical finishing as key reasons behind their unbeaten group-stage campaign. Australia, meanwhile, progressed as Group D runners-up after a disciplined group phase, but now face a significant step up in attacking quality. Egypt’s ability to control transitions and create chances through Salah and Marmoush gives them a slight edge heading into the knockout stages.

Reason for Tip

Knockout football typically produces tighter contests than the group stage, and this fixture has the profile of a controlled, tactical encounter. Egypt conceded very few clear-cut chances during the groups, while Australia built their qualification on defensive discipline and organisation. Although Egypt scored three against New Zealand, their matches against Belgium and Iran were far more measured affairs, reflecting their pragmatic approach against stronger opposition. Australia are also unlikely to open the game up early, knowing that remaining compact gives them their best opportunity of frustrating the African champions.

Reason for Tip

Despite expecting a relatively controlled game, the corner market still appeals. Egypt generate a significant proportion of their attacks from wide areas through Marmoush and Salah, while Australia regularly utilise overlapping full-backs and crosses into the box for their physical forwards. Should either side take the lead, the chasing team will be forced to commit more numbers forward, increasing pressure and naturally driving corner totals higher during the second half.

Reason for Tip

Omar Marmoush has carried his good club form into the World Cup and has become one of Egypt’s most influential attacking players. Operating alongside Salah, Marmoush has consistently stretched defences with his movement, direct dribbling and intelligent runs beyond the back line. He registered both goals and assists during the group stage and was heavily involved in Egypt’s 3-1 victory over New Zealand, while Reuters noted his partnership with Salah has been central to Egypt topping Group G. His versatility means he can create chances for teammates as effectively as he finishes them himself, making the score-or-assist market particularly appealing.
