Former Manchester United first-team coach Rene Meulensteen has delivered a stark warning to current boss Ruben Amorim ahead of Wednesday’s Europa League final against Tottenham — predicting “major trouble” for the Portuguese coach if United fail to win.

In a conversation with Tipman Tips, Meulensteen previewed the high-stakes final, shared insights from his time under Sir Alex Ferguson, and offered a candid assessment of the challenges facing Amorim and the Manchester United squad.

“Two Scenarios – and One Is Bleak”

According to Meulensteen, the outcome of the Europa League final will be pivotal for the club’s short-term future.

“If they win it, there’s more money, Champions League football, and a positive feeling that they can do something next season. If they don’t, they have no European football, no extra money — and it’s the same squad, same manager going into next year.”

He also warned that removing Bruno Fernandes from the equation leaves United in a “really bleak scenario” and criticised the lack of tactical progression under Amorim.

“You constantly see poor performances. Do they lack quality? Are the messages not getting through? Or is it the system? When you have the same team and don’t change the approach, why would next season be any different?”

What Sir Alex Told Players Before a Final

Drawing on his years alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, Meulensteen reflected on the legendary manager’s approach to high-pressure games.

“Sir Alex would always say: ‘Play the game, not the occasion.’ Start strong, take control, be positive, and enjoy it — you don’t get many finals in your career.”

He added that Ferguson placed great importance on using substitutions effectively:

“Every sub had to be ready to make an impact based on the flow of the game. He managed every minute with intent.”

Europe Has Been a Welcome Escape

Meulensteen believes that despite domestic struggles, the Europa League has been a mental lift for the squad.

“It’s a different competition entirely. The players can mentally switch and draw confidence from their strong run in Europe. They’ve done well here — they need to focus on that, not on the Premier League.”

Tottenham’s Dominance May Be a Double-Edged Sword

Although Tottenham have beaten United three times this season, Meulensteen sees that as a potential trap for Spurs.

“That kind of stat can lead to complacency in a one-off final. United need to approach it differently. Ange Postecoglou’s style is attacking and open, but on neutral ground, it’s a different challenge for both teams.”

Final Thoughts: A Defining Night for Amorim

Meulensteen concluded with a clear warning about what’s at stake for Amorim:

“He’s had enough time with this squad. If they lose and nothing changes heading into next season, they’re in serious trouble.”
