He loves this event, plays aggressively, and if the putter heats up early, we could be in for another dominant display. He’s short in the market for a reason  as his form here reads 1st, 1st, 9th, 4th, but sometimes the obvious selection is the right one.

One man who knows how to win here is Robert MacIntyre, and he returns to Canada with a real spring in his step. The Scottish left-hander was tied 20th at last week’s Memorial Tournament and posted a top-10 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge the week before. That’s quietly solid form heading into a venue where he made memories last year, lifting his first PGA Tour title with his father on the bag. MacIntyre is the kind of gritty competitor who thrives under the radar, and there’s every reason to believe he can mount a strong defence of his title this week.

If there’s going to be a Canadian winner, Pendrith might be the best bet. He’s been knocking on the door all season, with a handful of top-10 finishes including a very respectable showing at the PGA Championship. Big off the tee and confident with the flat stick, Pendrith will have the backing of the home crowd and the form to go deep over the weekend. He’s close, and this could be the week it all clicks.

Now for the longshot. Matthias Schmid might not be on many radars, but the German has quietly been putting together some solid rounds and has the kind of aggressive game that could thrive on a low-scoring layout like TPC Toronto. He’s a bit hit or miss, but when he’s on, he’s capable of mixing it with anyone. At these odds, he’s worth a dart for those looking for a surprise contender.

It’s an open-looking renewal this year, and while Rory sets the standard, there’s plenty of value to be had elsewhere. MacIntyre is a confident shout to go well on his title defence, while Pendrith is the pick of the home-grown contenders. And don’t be surprised if Schmid makes things interesting at a juicy price.
