NFL Week 1 Preview and Analysis

The 2025 NFL season officially launches Thursday, September 4, as the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host their fierce rivals, the Dallas Cowboys, in a high-stakes kickoff showdown. The Eagles, installed as favorites in this early primetime clash, notably face the Cowboys without their former defensive star Micah Parsons, now trading sides with Green Bay. Stepping into Parsons’ role is Sam Williams, who will begin opposite Dante Fowler Jr.—a matchup that’s generating buzz and a bit of tension along the line

From there, Week 1 rolls on Friday with the Kansas City Chiefs facing the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo, marking another season-opener abroad in front of an international audience

Sunday sees a packed slate of key contests:

  • NFC South rivals Tampa Bay at Atlanta, where the Buccaneers are modest favorites (by 2.5 points) in what promises to be a tight divisional battle

  • The Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns—an AFC North clash that always delivers intensity and rivalry dramaBuffalo Bills vs. Baltimore Ravens headline Sunday Night Football in a rematch of last season’s divisional round thriller. The Bills hold a slight edge in regular-season history, while Baltimore’s Sunday-night dominance (including a 35–10 win last year) looms large

  • Detroit Lions travel to Green Bay to test the Packers’ revamped defense—a reunion with familiar rivals and homecoming drama

  • And Minnesota visits Chicago Monday Night to lock down Week 1. The Bears welcome QB Caleb Williams under new head coach Ben Johnson, while facing the uncertainty of Vikings rookie QB J.J. McCarthy

NFL Sunday Week 1 Matchups

Sunday, September 7 — NFL Week 1 Highlights

Following the season-opening games on Thursday and Friday, Sunday, September 7 delivers a packed schedule with 13 regular-season games across afternoon and evening slots. Here’s how the matchups shape up and what to watch:

Early Afternoon (1:00 p.m. ET)

  • Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
The Saints will unveil their shiny new “Gameday Golds” alternate uniforms in their home opener against the Cardinals—a splashy debut that adds flair to the field and off-field excitement.

  • Carolina Panthers at Jacksonville Jaguars
Injuries and offseason roster shifts color the Panthers’ look, while the Jaguars aim to seize momentum early in the AFC South.

  • Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns
A high-stakes AFC North battle. The Bengals will test their offense on the road as a win here could set a tone for divisional dominance.

  • Las Vegas Raiders at New England Patriots
A new look for the Patriots: K’Lavon Chaisson, recently inked on a one-year deal, steps in as a game captain while facing his former team—the Raiders.

  • Miami Dolphins at Indianapolis Colts
Quarterback drama looms. The Colts have tapped Daniel Jones as their starter over Anthony Richardson, while the Dolphins hold their breath over Tua Tagovailoa’s health. Betting lines are tight, with early odds favoring the Colts by 1.5 points.

  • New York Giants at Washington Commanders
It’s an early litmus test for the revamped Giants, bouncing back from a poor 2024 season against a revitalized Commanders squad. Both sides look to make statements in this NFC East clash.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Jets
Expect gritty, physical play as both teams battle in a classic AFC showdown to open the Sunday slate.

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
A hotly anticipated NFC South showdown. The Bucs enter as modest favorites (around 2.5 points in betting lines).

Late Afternoon (4:05 p.m. ET)

  • San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks
A rugged, strategic NFC West showdown. Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers face off against Seattle’s new OC Klint Kubiak, while a coaching chess match unfolds with Seattle’s DC Mike MacDonald—who previously had success against San Francisco. Expect creative usage of Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle in a dynamic offense adapting to missing Jauan Jennings.

  • Tennessee Titans at Denver Broncos
A CFA battle brewing in Mile High, with the Titans aiming to make a statement on the road.

  • Los Angeles Rams vs. Houston Texans
A feature-heavy matchup spotlighting Matthew Stafford versus C.J. Stroud, while betting narratives focus on coaching trends—McVay’s consistent Week 1 performance as a favorite against Ryans’ struggles in September.

  • Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers
A regional rivalry with revenge on the mind—though Detroit must contain Micah Parsons, who’s historically been a nightmare for Lions’ OT Penei Sewell. Parsons’ elite pressure rate could be a defining factor.

Prime Time (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC)

  • Baltimore Ravens at Buffalo Bills
Sunday Night Football returns with a rematch of their dramatic 2024 Divisional Round. Josh Allen, fresh off his MVP season but ranked third in the NFL’s Top 100 Players list, returns to face Lamar Jackson and Baltimore—who are surely seeking retribution.

Why Each Leg Makes Sense

Arizona Cardinals Moneyline

Arizona comes in with seasoned veterans and emerging stars: Kyler Murray is healthy and primed to lead a potent offense featuring rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr. alongside James Conner at running back. Their defense, led by head coach Jonathan Gannon, has been retooled to be aggressive and disciplined—bolstered by strategic offseason additions.

New Orleans enters the season with uncertainty at quarterback following Derek Carr’s retirement. They’re juggling options like Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and possibly others—none of whom bring the confidence of a proven starter.

Cincinnati Bengals Moneyline

The Bengals preserved and extended their top weapons: Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Noah Fant—giving Joe Burrow elite receiving support. A bolstered offensive line featuring Dalton Risner (and Lucas Patrick re-signed) provides the best protection Burrow has seen in years. Unlike past seasons, Cincinnati’s coaching staff had starters (Burrow and Chase in particular) play in the preseason to build momentum and acclimate to game intensity. They will also be looking to end their awful opening week historical results.

Pittsburgh Steelers Moneyline
The Steelers’ defense is projected to be one of the top units in the NFL for the 2025 season. With a formidable pass rush and a secondary capable of limiting big plays, they can control the game tempo and pressure the opposing quarterback. Add to this the addition of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and new Wide Receiver DK Metcalf, the Steelers are retooled for another season. The New York Jets are entering the season with uncertainty at the quarterback position. This instability can lead to offensive struggles, providing the Steelers’ defense an opportunity to capitalize and dominate the game

Washington Commanders Moneyline

The Commanders’ offense is led by second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels, who had a standout rookie season, leading the team to the NFC Championship. With offseason improvements and the addition of veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel, Daniels is poised to build on his success. The New York Giants are entering the season with uncertainty at the quarterback position. While veteran Russell Wilson is expected to start, the team has a rookie backup, Jaxson Dart, who may not be ready for Week 1. This instability can lead to offensive struggles, providing the Commanders’ defense an opportunity to capitalize.
