Although he shoulders a standard five pound penalty for that recent triumph, the sheer authority of that performance indicates he remains significantly ahead of the handicapper. The strategic booking of three pound claimer Jack Callan brilliantly offsets the majority of that weight penalty, maintaining the gelding’s distinct competitive advantage. Junior Des Mottes (3.40 Catterick)

Our NAP of the Day goes to the progressive Junior Des Mottes, who bids to complete a hat-trick at Catterick this afternoon.

The Nick Scholfield-trained seven-year-old has been in outstanding form recently, winning impressively at Fakenham and Plumpton last month. Since the addition of cheekpieces he has looked a much more focused and progressive horse, travelling strongly through his races before finishing them off well.

He does run here under a penalty, but the level of form he has shown recently suggests that may not be enough to stop him. This race looks fairly ordinary on paper and there doesn’t appear to be a rival capable of matching his current level of performance.

The trip and ground conditions look ideal, and with J M Quinlan in the saddle – a jockey who has an excellent record when teaming up with the yard – everything points towards another big run.

If Junior Des Mottes runs to the level he has shown on his last two starts, he should take plenty of beating and looks the standout selection on Wednesday’s card.

Trained by Clive Cox, he made a highly encouraging seasonal reappearance at Nottingham last month following a lengthy ten-month absence and beneficial wind surgery. Although finishing sixth, he traveled smoothly for a long way, heavily implying he needed the outing to strip fitter and shake off residual rustiness. Prior to his break, Stardancer was a model of consistency, logging excellent placed efforts on the all-weather. Now dropping to an official rating of 74 and partnered with Georgia Dobie, he finds himself in an exceptionally winnable Class 5 turf contest. With his crucial comeback run securely behind him, Stardancer is poised to bounce back to peak form and deliver a prominent showing at a price that looks generous.

🎯 Dark Horse

Baldomero (4.02 Southwell)

Our Dark Horse racing tip at a big price is Baldomero in the 4.02 at Southwell.

The eight-year-old from the Mick Appleby yard has been in very solid form since November, with recent figures reading 19114, including a course win here off a mark of 83. After a series of good efforts he now runs from a rating of 92, which could prove workable in the right race.

Despite finishing fourth last time out, the run wasn’t devoid of promise and this contest looks a very winnable race if things fall his way. Baldomero has proven course form, handles the trip well and is versatile in terms of draw, so stall 11 shouldn’t pose too much of an issue.

This looks like a race that could be there for the taking and if Joanna Mason can get him into a good rhythm early, Baldomero has the ability to outrun his odds.

At around 16/1, he represents excellent value and could easily sneak into the frame or even land a surprise win.

Flying Pimpernel – Catterick

Jamie Snowden’s Flying Pimpernel makes his hurdling debut following promising bumper form. His recent run at Plumpton looks stronger than it first appears, with the form already working out well.

Snowden’s yard has a strong record preparing horses for hurdling debuts, and with top jockey Gavin Sheehan in the saddle, this youngster looks a major player if taking to the obstacles smoothly.

Noble Birth – Naas

The experienced Noble Birth switches back to hurdles today, which could prove a smart move from the Gavin Cromwell yard.

A three-time hurdles winner, he has been competing in stronger races than this recently and the 2m6f trip looks idealgiven his previous form. Conditions are expected to be soft or heavy at Naas, which suits him well.

With Keith Donoghue booked for the ride, Noble Birth has a strong chance of returning to winning ways.

River Spey – Kempton

Three-year-old River Spey looks an interesting contender on handicap debut at Kempton this evening.

He ended last season with a win at Chelmsford and previously ran well in a competitive handicap at the Ebor meeting. While he returns from a 146-day break, trainer Ed Walker has a good record with horses returning from a layoff.
