Big field race here in the third at Punchestown and one who looks to be a cut above the rest is five year old Elliot trained Speculateur. After winning his point to point moved to the powerful Elliot stable and whilst the debut run at Punchestown was a little underwhelming, progressed strongly on second start at Clonmel last month when finished 2nd behind a very nice looking prospect. That run was on heavy ground which is the forecasted ground here today so that lends itself to being a big plus for this horse. Has experience at this course which is always a bonus and the trip is in his normal firing range. Yard ticking along nicely and top string stable jockey aboard in Jack Kennedy who is winning more than 25% of his races at the moment. This field looks largely very opposable and Speculateur is likely to prove too strong for them. Should win.

Speculateur looks a confident NAP in a competitive-looking contest at Punchestown.

The five-year-old began his career winning a point-to-point before moving to the powerful Gordon Elliott yard. While his debut at this track was slightly underwhelming, he showed marked improvement on his second start when finishing a strong second at Clonmel behind a well-regarded rival.

That run came on heavy ground, which is again forecast here — a clear positive. He also brings previous course experience into a field where many are open to question marks. With the yard in good form and Jack Kennedy aboard — operating at over a 25% strike rate — Speculateur looks a class above this opposition and is expected to take plenty of beating.

Four year old Sanditon is yet to get over the line in first place however has ran well in defeat on a number of occasions. Form on the polytrack is strong with a trio of runs at Lingfield with form of 332. Ran at Southwell on the tapeta lto and didn’t run a good race when eighth of ten but looks to have a reasonable chance on the return to what appears to be the favoured surface. Remains on a workable mark and likely to get up and win sooner or later and this race today looks contestable for Sanditon. Yard in a bit of a cold spell recently but all spells change sooner or later. Jack Mitchell back in the saddle is a positive change and he’s no stranger to success here. Does need to bounce back to form today to be in with a chance, but that’s not out of the question at this track and could definitely sneak a place or even better at a nice price.

At bigger odds, Sanditon makes appeal as the Dark Horse in the 2.35 at Kempton.

Although still seeking a first career win, the four-year-old has shaped well on multiple occasions, particularly on the polytrack at Lingfield, where his form reads 3-3-2. His most recent run on the tapeta at Southwell can be forgiven, as it doesn’t appear to be his favoured surface.

A return to polytrack looks key, and he remains on a workable mark in a race that appears very winnable. Jack Mitchell returns to the saddle, which is a positive, and while the yard have been quiet recently, that can quickly change. Sanditon could easily outrun his odds and is capable of hitting the frame — or better.

Four year old Down To Business was previously running on the flat before being switched to hurdles two starts ago. Form of 34 over the obstacles so far and so remains open to plenty of further progress. Both last two runs were in Class 3 and drops back a grade to Class 4 company today. Debut at Ludlow today and this track is sharper than he’s used too but that’s a positive. Represents a top yard who are in solid form and has Harry Skelton aboard for the ride. Should make his presence felt today and the improvement is likely to be evident. Would not be a surprise to see Down To Business do the business here.

Form over hurdles in first three starts of 664 but perhaps hasn’t progressed as expected thus far. Has been given a big chance in this race which represents a much weaker affair and looks the one to beat. Will stay the trip and heavy ground should pose no problem for this five year old. Remains more unexposed than a lot of this field and it’s entirely plausible he improves beyond them. Represents a top Irish trainer with a stellar record here and has a fantastic jockey aboard in Mark Walsh. Lots to like for Agameoftwohalves and could run out a comfortable winner.

Seven year old Sea Thrift was sent chasing for the first time two starts ago and looked a big danger throughout the race until falling three fences from the finish. Built on that promise when scoring in fine style on second chase start lto at Plumpton. Handicapper has hit her with a 7lb penalty for that win, but for good reason, it was comfortable and progressive and she looks set for another big run today. Fine over this trip and acts on this ground and has the same apprentice aboard as the win lto. Ceiling remains unknown in this discipline for this mare and whilst the penalty is in play, it may not be enough.

Five year old Spun To Gold was a force to be reckoned with last autumn when completing a hattrick of AW wins. Failed to continue progress thanks to the handicapper and struggled on the increased mark following final win and form has read 6967 since. Now back on last winning mark and so a chance is taken on this boy returning to form and putting in a big run today in what is a very ordinary and winnable race. Has a good draw from stall 4 and generally starts well. Yard and jockey both have a reasonable record at this course and are both hovering around a 20% winrate in the last fortnight. This is a weaker race than recent contests and Spun To Gold can challenge off this adjusted mark today. Good chance.
