Trigg showed stacks of ability when winning on debut at Worcester in September and runs under a penalty here today. Ever shrewd Skeltons have enlisted apprentice Heidi Palin here today who’s apprentice allowance nullifies the penalty and Trigg therefore looks very dangerous today. With further progression likely on second start, Trigg may prove too good for this field today. The next closest in the market hasn’t ran for almost 9 months and may not be tuned up for this despite looking useful in Irish point on only start. Skeltons in very strong form at the moment and it’s hard to dismiss them, particularly in this. Only question mark for Trigg really is the ground, but the slower ground doesn’t looks a complete write off on pedigree and should be handled fine. With any sort of improvement from debut, Trigg should take this.

Trigg made a striking impression when winning on debut at Worcester in September, travelling powerfully and finding plenty late on – a sign he has serious ability. He carries a penalty today, but the Skelton team have cleverly booked apprentice Heidi Palin, whose claim nullifies that penalty, leaving Trigg very well treated.

The Skelton yard are firing in winners for fun, and this four-year-old looks the type to improve significantly again on just his second start. His main market rival returns from a long absence and may need the run, while Trigg arrives fit, progressive and in form. Ground is a slight unknown, but pedigree suggests he should handle it just fine.

If he steps forward even slightly from his debut, he will take all the beating.

Wilhelmina has been progressive since handicapping with form in handicaps of 742 and is taken to keep that progression going here today. Still very low mileage and unexposed and lots to like about that last performance at Wolverhampton in what was arguably a stronger race than this. Only nudged up a 1lb for that second place lto and looks to still be on a threatening mark as the experience continues to stack. Has a wide draw to contend with but in this race paying 4 places, this three year old has a brilliant chance to keep improving and take another place at a nice price. If a couple of things go right and they hit the break in a good position, there’s nothing stopping Wilhelmina being bang there at the end and isn’t completely written out of winning.

Wilhelmina continues to progress with racing and her latest second at Wolverhampton came in a much stronger race than today’s. Handicap form figures of 7-4-2 show her going firmly the right way, and she remains on a very workable mark — only nudged up a single pound.

The wide draw isn’t ideal, but in a race paying four places, her improving profile makes her a cracking each-way play at a generous price. If she breaks well and secures a decent early position, she could easily be right in the mix late on. Still unexposed and capable of better, Wilhelmina is a big player at the odds.

Interesting little race this one, three runners in the field and all have good chances. Excelero is technically the outsider at the moment if you can even call it that at 5/2 but he has plenty of ability and is still very unexposed over the fences. Made chase debut on seasonal return lto at Worcester and was fourth of five that day but not by a long distance. Winner of that race has since gone on to win a Listed race at Cheltenham and so the form seems to have some substance. Ground and trip are both fine and yard has a decent record here. This race is pretty ripe for the pickings and Excelero should strip fitter from seasonal debut and has a good chance here.

Esperti is now an eight year old but despite that has shown he can still be competitive and win. Has ran many times at this track and generally does well here so the return to Ffos Las is a positive. Ended last seasons campaign with a win here on heavy ground and the forecast soft ground today is more a positive than anything. Returned to action at Newton Abbot lto and finished a strong second after 8 months off and should strip fitter for that run out. This aging boy doesn’t seem done yet and with Sean Bowen aboard, another win looks likely on this return to Ffos Las.

Reason for Tip

Most of this field are aging campaigners who are largely exposed and we know what they are likely to do on this marathon 3m7f handicap. An interesting contestant is Wal Buck’s who has won over 3m2f on a couple of occasions but is sent over this distance for the first time today. Unexposed on marathon distances and from what we’ve seen historically, and on pedigree, looks as if the extra yardage may be suitable and right up his alley. Ran ok on seasonal debut but was clear the run was needed and should strip a lot fitter for that run today. Soft ground is of no concern and yard have started to tick along a little bit. Pretty open race, and if this length trip does turn out to suit Wal Buck’s, he is very capable of taking this.

Two year old Akabusi won on handicap debut back in July and had regressed a little from the rising mark over the last couple of months. However, bounced right back when getting up to win at Wolverhampton last month and looks to have found some form again. Gone up 5lb for that win, but Toby Moore and his 7lb apprentice allowance are aboard today so that is nullified and means Akabusi remains on a very tempting mark. Has a wide draw but generally gets out the gate quick so should be able to get in a strong position from the off. Toby Moore whilst young and inexperienced has shown talent in his riding so far and he’s a bit of a chip off the old block. Lots to like here and Akabusi would not be a shock victor in this race.

1) Excelero – 12.55 Warwick (5/2)

Three-runner race with all holding chances, but Excelero looks the one with the most upside. Unexposed over fences and not beaten far on chase debut in a race where the winner has since gone on to land a Listed contest at Cheltenham. With fitness improved and conditions ideal, he’s a major player.

2) Esperti – 1.35 Ffos Las (9/4)

An eight-year-old who loves this track and ended last season with a win here on heavy ground. Returned with a strong second after a long break and should be fitter today. With Sean Bowen booked and conditions in his favour, he looks primed for another big run.

3) Wal Buck’s – 2.26 Hexham (5/2)

A fascinating contender stepping up to 3m7f for the first time. Has winning form over 3m2f and everything about his pedigree and racing style suggests he’ll relish further. Yard coming into form and a big step forward expected now he’s fitter. Strong chance if the trip unlocks improvement.

4) Akabusi – 7.10 Kempton (4/1)

Returned to form with a good win at Wolverhampton and remains well treated thanks to Toby Moore’s 7lb claimnegating the rise. Quick from the stalls and likely to overcome the wide draw by getting handy early. Very much on the upgrade again and looks a live winning threat.
