Reason for Tip

Four starts so far for this four year and the form reads 1222. Ran a strong race on seasonal debut last month here at Kelso when only losing to a stablemate. Has good form on soft ground and should relish the conditions here at Kelso today. Goes up in trip today which on pedigree looks a very wise move frankly. Half brother to Welsh National winner and related to others with wins at this distance. Should be fitter and more tuned up for this second start this season today and in this small field race, looks the likely winner. Solid Performer from the McCain yard is very unexposed and could be anything, but not sure this trip and ground is the ideal candidate for that horse and the others don’t seem threatening really. Eagles Reprieve has good form at this track, looks progressive with plenty of ability and looks the winner in this.

Conditions at Kelso should suit perfectly, the yard is in sharp form, and he’ll strip fitter second time out. In a small field lacking depth, Eagles Reprieve simply looks the standout. A progressive type with scope to climb the ranks — the most likely winner on the card today.

Reason for Tip

Northerner has showed minor glimpses of ability so far in career but none worth overly writing home about. Has placed here before back in September and has ran occasionally ok at the track. Has struggled on a number of occasions and decision taken to give Northerner a wind op and this is first run since that surgery and so will be interesting to see how this four year old does today. Has a good draw, is on a lowly mark and could massively outun odds here in this if the wind op helps. Outside chance but a horse winning after a wind op is not a rarity and it can transform some.

Northerner hasn’t shown enough to leap off the page at first glance, but this is the first run since a wind operation, and we often see an immediate bounce following that procedure. He’s run respectably at Newcastle before, gets a good draw, and is down to a very workable mark.

In what looks an average race for the grade, Northerner could massively outrun his double-figure price if the wind op unlocks improvement. A lively outsider with clear reasons to expect a better showing today.

1) Guernesey – 12.55 Kelso (4/1)

Nine-year-old who hasn’t won for over three years, but as a result is now dangerously well handicapped. Showed promise late last season (form 344) and should come on bundles for the recent run at Ayr. Dropped another 2lb, fitter today, and in a weak race — strong chance to get competitive.

2) Jorah – 1.45 Lingfield (7/2)

Switches to chasing for the first time and that looks a major positive based on pedigree. Had a run already this season, ground is ideal, and Harry Skelton takes over for a yard flying at the moment. If jumping cleanly, has a big winning opportunity.

3) Mutual Respect – 3.50 Lingfield (6/1)

A consistent performer (form 24243) and returned with a good third at Bangor last month. Fitter today, a proven 3-time chase winner, and a strong booking in Gavin Sheehan. Despite being nine, still retains fire and competitiveness. Very solid each-way type with winning potential.

4) Silky Lass – 5.45 Newcastle (7/1)

Massive improver on paper. Green but promising on debut in a warm Class 2 at Musselburgh. Back to Class 5 here, related to a tapeta winner, and trained by Karl Burke who is having a superb season with juveniles. Expect a big step forward. Live chance at a price.
