Gunnery Sergeant is a fascinating Irish raider who commands serious respect in the 3.18 at Perth today. Trained by the powerful Gordon Elliott stable, the 6yo gelding travels over to Scotland to make his highly anticipated handicap chase debut. While he has mixed hurdles and fences recently, his best form includes consecutive runner-up finishes in competitive Irish maiden hurdles at Fairyhouse and Downpatrick earlier this year. He already has useful experience over fences from a pair of beginners’ chases, and today’s mark of 108 looks very reasonable for his handicap bow. Elliott enjoys an exceptional strike rate when sending runners to Perth, and booking the services of top-tier jockey Sean Bowen is a massive statement of intent. Melvin Udall looks to bounce back to his best in the 8.00 at Newbury today. Trained by Grace Harris, the talented 4yo gelding showed exactly what he is capable of when making a winning seasonal debut at Doncaster in March, staying on strongly to defeat a competitive fifteen-runner field over this seven-furlong distance. While his subsequent efforts on turf at Thirsk and on the all-weather at Kempton were somewhat below par, he remains a highly capable performer on his day. He returns to his preferred turf surface today on a fast track that should suit his running style, and the good to firm ground is expected to bring out his absolute best. With class-act jockey David Egan booked to ride and his handicap mark of 80 looking highly competitive, Melvin Udall has the raw talent to bounce back and mount a major bid at a big price.

She makes her handicap debut here, and while there is a break to overcome, her past performances suggest she has more to give. The Goldie/Mulrennan partnership has an excellent strike rate at Ayr, and if Tsuki is fit and ready to go, she could surprise at a nice price.

The versatile 8yo grey gelding, trained by Iain Jardine, is a proven course-and-distance winner over hurdles at this particular venue, having tasted sweet success here last summer. He showed he retains plenty of enthusiasm and form when finishing a highly encouraging third of twelve over this track and trip last month under today’s jockey, Danny McMenamin. On that occasion, he traveled smoothly and chased the leaders home, beaten just over four lengths. Dropped one pound in the weights to a very attractive mark of 105, he looks beautifully treated in this small six-runner field today.
