Eight year old Bective Abbey has had a good transition into chasing and form since changing to this discipline has been 222. Yet to get the job done over fences but yard have found him a cracking little race here which looks his for the taking. Represents a drop in class today, over his ideal trip and on ground he will relish. This race won’t take as much winning as the contests he’s finished runner up in and the form from the Kempton race the day after boxing day is strong and noteworthy. From a major yard with a 46% course strikerate at Hereford and has a top jockey aboard in James Bowen who’s won more than a quarter of his races in the last month. Yard and jockey have a fantastic record together and Bective Abbey looks set for a first chasing win today. Very likely winner.

Eight-year-old Bective Abbey has made a very solid transition into chasing and his form over fences now reads 222. While he’s yet to get his head in front in this discipline, the yard appears to have found a very good opportunity for him here.

This represents a drop in class compared to the races he’s been contesting, and conditions look ideal with the trip and ground both firmly in his favour. The form from the Kempton race the day after Boxing Day has worked out well and looks strong in the context of this contest.

Nicky Henderson’s yard boasts a 46% strike-rate at Hereford, and James Bowen takes the ride having enjoyed an excellent run of form recently. With yard and jockey combining well and the race looking weaker than his recent assignments, Bective Abbey looks set to finally land a chasing success today.

Reason for Tip

Pretty open race here in the last of the day and one who looks set for a big run is four year old Nordic Norm from the Jenkins yard. Failed to feature for Karl Burke last year after starting life in much deeper races. Has been there of thereabouts in last three starts with form of 445 and the fifth lto wasn’t far away, about 3 lengths behind the winner. Has now dropped another 3lb to a mark of 69 and likely to be going close today at a big price. Runs his usual trip at a track he has ran well at before and has a strong draw from stall 3. Does his best running from the front half of the pack and we are likely to see those tactics employed here today. Neither yard or jockey have overly good records at present but Nordic Norm is on a mark that’s a little hard to ignore now and so a chance is taken on him. Big price, but a chance.

This looks a very open contest and one who could outrun big odds is Nordic Norm. The four-year-old began his career with Karl Burke in stronger company and struggled to make a big impact, but since moving yards he has shown signs of improvement.

His recent form figures of 445 suggest he’s edging closer to a competitive run, and last time out he finished around three lengths behind the winner, a performance that reads better than it may appear at first glance.

He’s now dropped another 3lb to a mark of 69, which makes him look attractively treated. Nordic Norm returns to a track where he has run well previously and is drawn well in stall 3, which should allow him to adopt his preferred position towards the front half of the field.

At a big price in an open race, Nordic Norm could easily get involved late on if things fall his way.

Four year old Galactique has shown plenty of promise including a Fontwell double on only his second and third starts over obstacles. Sent up to a grade 2 at Cheltenham back in November which was a tough assignment on rather heavy ground which isn’t wholly suited. Makes handicap debut off a very reasonable opening mark and looks a big threat today in this race. Trip is very well suited and the firmer ground than lto is a major positive. Open to plenty of further progression and represents a yard who’ve had a very good year so far. Stable jockey Caoilin Quinn gets the ride and Galactique looks primed for a winning start to handicapping today. Big chance.

Knebworth has contested this race twice previously and hasn’t finished out of the top 4 in those runs. Both of those efforts in this race were when returning from a break but this time has had a run after the break and that was a strongly run race at Chelmsford in January which he won handily. Remains on a very workable mark and has a good draw today from stall 4. Stable are currently firing which stands this boy in good stead and has a great jockey aboard in Billy Loughnane who is a regular winner at this track. Will likely take up a prominent position from this draw and will be hard to peg back if given the freedom up top. Major player.

Four time winner in this discipline and despite the form reading 4732P has ran creditably in a number of much warmer races than this. Remains on a very workable mark and the return to Ayr is a positive today, generally runs very well here and is now 2lb lower than when winning this race last year. Will appreciate the soft ground today and despite being ten, retains plenty of ability and experience to get the job done in this. Yard ticking along very nicely and so is Sean Quinlan the jockey. Yard and jockey have a 40% strikerate at this track together and might be adding to that tally here if Ned Tanner produces what we know he can.

Consistent five year old with good recent form of 351121 including two wins and a second place over C&D. Love this course and the return here following the win at Southwell lto is a positive. Does now go up in class but has been highly progressive recently at the figures and looks capable of taking this warmer race in his stride off bottom weight. Well drawn in stall 2 to assume his usual position towards the middle front and has a jockey change to Rowan Scott which is no bad thing. Rowan has a good record here and has won on this horse previously. Yard running at a strikerate in the high 20s currently and when stable and jockey combine at this course, they’ve won half of their races. Mr Nugget looks very capable still and is a big danger today.

Knebworth has contested this race twice before and finished in the top four on both occasions. Those runs came when returning from a break, but this time he arrives race-fit after a convincing win at Chelmsford earlier this year.

He remains on a very workable mark, is nicely drawn in stall 4, and represents a stable currently in excellent form. With Billy Loughnane aboard — a jockey with a strong record at Wolverhampton — Knebworth is likely to adopt a prominent position early and could prove difficult to catch if allowed to dictate the pace.

Ned Tanner

Veteran Ned Tanner may now be ten years old but he remains capable and experienced, with four wins in this discipline. His recent form figures of 4732P include several solid runs in races stronger than today’s contest.

He returns to Ayr, a track where he often runs well, and is now 2lb lower than when winning this race last year. The soft ground conditions will suit and the Alexander–Quinlan combination has an excellent 40% strike-rate at this track.

If Ned Tanner produces his best form, he has every chance of landing this contest once again.

Mr Nugget is an extremely consistent five-year-old whose recent form reads 351121, including two wins and a runner-up finish over course and distance.

He clearly enjoys racing at Wolverhampton and the return here after a victory at Southwell looks a big positive. Although stepping up slightly in class, his recent progression suggests he is capable of handling the rise.

Drawn well in stall 2 and likely to race prominently, he also benefits from the booking of Rowan Scott, who has previously won on the horse. With the Simcock yard operating at a healthy strike-rate and a strong course record with this jockey, Mr Nugget looks a serious contender.
