Reason for Tip

Khrisma is a dual Grade 3 winner from France who’s made a solid start to life over here with two wins from five runs in novice hurdles. Makes handicap debut today and frankly looks possibly a cut above this lot. Has looked better and better for each run and whilst this is a warm ish race, Khrisma is effective on both ground and this distance and looks set to remain progressive and take the win today. From a powerful stable in the Hendersons and has first string jockey aboard in Nico De Boinville. Neither yard or jockey have ran at Kelso in the last few years and so it’s new territory in that regard but both are in very fine form and Khrisma is in good hands. Looks a very likely winner and price may shorten by the time the race starts from the 5/4 at time of writing.

U Cant Be Serious made the perfect transition to fences on seasonal debut, travelling powerfully and winning with plenty in hand over this exact trip. Now 2/2 at 2m3f, he returns to Exeter under ideal conditions with the same rider onboard.

The Tizzard/Gingell combination boasts an impressive 22% strike rate at this track, and with the horse still at the early stages of his chasing career, there’s plenty more improvement to come. Ground is perfect, trip is ideal, and the profile screams “follow up”.

A major chance and today’s standout bet.

Reason for Tip

Very open affair here in the 4.38 at Southwell and one who looks to have better potential than the market reveals is four year old Against the Wind from the Ryan’s. Won in very fine style back in July last year here at this course and wasn’t far away here in September either. Struggled in the Group 1 Abbaye at Longchamp but that was a stretch ability wise and returns to much calmer waters today in this Class 2 at Southwell, a course he enjoys. 1lb lower today than the last run at Southwell and can go well fresh which is a positive for this return after 6 months off. Has a plum draw in stall 1 and does his best running from the front so likely to see a fast start and take the front today. Mark still looks well treated and this youngster has stacks of ability and will be hard to peg back today if allowed an easy lead. Yard going nicely and this race looks a very good chance for Against the Wind to return to winning form, even at a price.

Benacre is your live outsider today. He’s been rock-solid in Class 4 company this year with form figures 1-2-3-4 at the level and simply found life too tough upped to Class 3 last time.

Back to Class 4 and back to Newcastle — where he’s already won — he sits just 2lb above his last winning mark and gets the services of Billy Loughnane, who rides this track extremely well.

Expect him to go forward. If Loughnane can grab an uncontested lead, this horse becomes very difficult to reel in.

Dangerous at double-figure odds.

Six year old Karma Police is still rather low mileage and as a result is still somewhat unexposed. Looked stronger on handicap debut lto at Newbury when second of thirteen and is taken to progress from that run today and go one better. Should be fine with this slightly longer trip and the ground is favourable. Remains open to further improvement and from a yard who are firing repeatedly at the moment with a 30% strikerate of late, including further wins yesterday. Likely to be heavily involved today in what’s a weak looking race and looks primed for a big run in only second handicap start.

Good novice form including back to back wins at Fontwell and Wetherby back at the end of the last year. Good third in a Listed novice event at Sandown but was below par lto at Huntingdon. Has had a wind op since and returns for first start post op and it’s likely to have helped this youngster. Drops back in trip slightly to 2m2f which looks a favourable distance, looked a little stretched last time over 2m24f. Represents a top yard who churn out plenty of winners and has a strong booking in J J Burke who has a 29% strikerate at this track. This is a warm race for handicap debut but if returning to form we’ve seen prior will be heavily involved and remains open to plenty of further improvement now handicapped. Big player.

Looks very much between the two at the head of the market and favour is for five year old Eagles Reprieve. Has shown consistency and ability in last five starts with form of 22212. Generally a very reliable horse whereas the Jefferson horse isn’t quite so much. Eagles Reprieve is a sound jumper, will stay this usual trip and will relish the ground today. Usual jockey Jack Power retains the ride and he remains a jockey in great form with a remarkable strikerate of 60% in the last two weeks. Yard very much firing too and the pairing have a good record together, including here at Kelso. This five year old looks set for another big run and is taken to get the job done today.

Southern Warrior

Three year old Southern Warrior is one of the most unexposed horses in this field and hasn’t been disgraced in first three starts with form of 354 and has been progressive at the figures. Makes handicap debut today off what looks to be a very fair mark and won’t take a great deal of further improvement to make a winning run. Does have a wide draw to contend with but has a solid jockey aboard in Callum Shepherd who will help. Callum not having the most solid spell at the moment and is probably overdue a couple of winners and Southern Warrior looks a decent chance for that. Yard do very well here at this course and it would be no great surprise to see this youngster improve beyond his rivals today and grab the win. Good chance.
