Flamengo’s impressive group-stage campaign has set up a blockbuster round of 16 tie against Bayern Munich at the Hard Rock Stadium. The Brazilian giants finished top of Group D with seven points, seeing off Esperance de Tunis (2-0) and Chelsea (3-1) before a 1-1 draw with Los Angeles.
Their reward? An early knockout clash with one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Bayern’s surprise 1-0 defeat to Benfica on matchday three saw them drop to second in Group C, despite convincing wins over Auckland City (10-0) and Boca Juniors (2-1). Vincent Kompany rested key players for the Benfica match, but it proved costly.
Flamengo, managed by former left-back Filipe Luis, have been one of the most consistent performers so far. Their comeback win over Chelsea underlined their quality and experience, and as three-time Copa Libertadores champions, they won’t be overawed by the challenge.
