Birmingham City v Port Vale Betting Preview

It certainly wasn’t pretty but Birmingham City registered a 1-0 home win against Oxford United in the Championship on Saturday at St Andrews which not only made it two wins out of their opening three games in the second tier, but also extended The Blues’ unbeaten run at home to 12 competitive matches.

Birmingham City had previously swept aside a very disappointing Sheffield United outfit 2-1 at St Andrews in the 1st round of the EFL Cup and manager Chris Davies has the luxury of making changes to the starting XI on Tuesday night to give some of the fringe players time on the pitch.

Port Vale by contrast have had to endure a somewhat turbulent start to their League One campaign as the visitors have still yet to record a win in the English third tier having drawn twice but also slipping to three defeats in their opening five league matches.

Defeats at the hands of Rotherham United, Stevenage and Doncaster Rovers do not bode well for Darren Moore’s side for Tuesday night’s trip to the west midlands despite picking up a 1-0 win on the road in the 1st round of this competition against Blackpool.

Cardiff City picked up a fourth league win in five games in League One on Saturday when The Bluebirds registered a valuable 1-0 win away from home at fellow relegated side from the Championship, Luton Town, and the Welsh hosts will be in confident mood as they switch their focus to this 2nd round clash in the EFL Cup against Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side have collected league wins against Peterborough United, Rotherham United, AFC Wimbledon and aforementioned Luton Town, while also seeing off League Two club Swindon Town 2-1 at home in the 1st round of the EFL Cup.

Cheltenham Town sit rock-bottom of the League Two table after slumping to five league defeats on the trot so far this season in the domestic fourth tier, so The Robins look to have their work cut out if they’re to spring a surprise in the EFL Cup at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Losses at the hands of Cambridge United, Chesterfield, MK Dons, Bromley and Barnet respectively do not bode well for this encounter against in-form Cardiff City despite collecting a 2-0 home win against Exeter City in the previous round.

Stoke City will head into this EFL Cup 2nd round tie at home against League One visitors Bradford City sitting top of the Championship table with the maximum nine-point haul after their opening three league games thanks to wins against Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday and newly relegated Southampton.

In addition, The Potters edged Walsall 4-3 on penalties in the 1st round of this competition but manager Mark Robins will be expecting his side to prevail in the regular ninety minutes on Tuesday night as the hosts will once again enjoy home advantage.

Bradford City also remain unbeaten after their opening five games in League One following promotion from League Two at the end of last season as The Bantams have picked up early season victories at the expense of Wycombe Wanderers, Luton Town and Stockport County.

The Yorkshire club also sent Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers crashing out of the EFL Cup in the 1st round with a creditable 2-1 win away from home at Ewood Park, so Graham Alexander’s side are certainly no mugs.
