Barnet vs Newport County Match Preview and Betting Insight

Date & Kick-off: Tuesday, 29 July 2025 at The Hive Stadium, north-west London. Kick-off listed as approximately 19:30 pm

Format: This match is part of the newly reintroduced preliminary round for the 2025–26 Carabao Cup (EFL Cup), featuring two regional southern and northern ties to reduce early rounds ahead of Premier League entrants in European competitions

Stakes: Winner advances to the First Round proper, to face Millwall; loser exits the competition early

The EFL is back (sort of) with this early round tie of the EFL Cup with last seasons National League Winners Barnet facing League 2 survival artists Newport County. In what should be an interesting tie before the league season has even begun, we take a look at a bet builder that reflects the early nature of the season but also some trends that we could see throughout the season.

Barnet head into this match with a lot of new additions but a familiar man at the helm in Dean Brennan. Brennan is known for his fiery interviews but don’t let this deter you, his team play fantastic football and his players will run through a brick wall for him. The cream of the crop in the national league last year and they have added real league quality heading into the new EFL season and we expect that to show in this early match up.

For Newport. the story is very different. A new manager, a new squad and a lot of new ideas but also unknowns. David Jones joined as manager through the summer having been the manager of Manchester United’s U21’s and also assistant manager. He has been at the heart of nurturing some of the Manchester United talent in the academy but stepping into the professional game is a complete unknown quantity.

We have produced a bet builder to reflect both of these situations including goals, the nature of cup football and the obvious early season feel.

Barnet v Newport – 4.22/1 Bet Builder Tip

1. Barnet – To win the match
Barnet are the champions of the national league and while it is a league below, teams that get promoted from the national league tend to do a lot better than predicted. Dean Brennan’s side have made some fantastic additions to the team including Joe Hugill from Manchester United on a season long loan and a champion from League 2 last season in Romoney Chritchlow. Both players are easily capable of playing up a league and this should provide Barnet a solid core to get the win at home.

2. Over 2.5 goals – Yes
While there is no data to go on this year so far, we should simply look at the principles of both of these sides. Dean Brennan’s sides focus on attacking football, chance creation and scoring a lot of goals. With the added firepower in Hugill and Kanu on the wing, they are a constant threat. Newport will still be adapting to their new managers principles but if his Man United U21 side is anything to go off, they will look to play fast paced possession football, which could lead to good attacking moments, but also errors as the new players adjust to the system. Add to this it being the first game of the season where players are not at full capacity yet, the opportunity for goals is too much to turn down.

3. Over 2.5 cards

Knockout football, first game of the season and two sides who like to show their tenacity. Barnet averaged 2.13 cards per match themselves, with opponents averaging roughly 2.2 cards, meaning the total cards in their matches average around 4.33 per game. Newport County’s matches saw an average of approximately 2.7 cards per match making over 2.5 cards a likeable market here.

4. Over 7.5 corners

Matches involving Barnet averaged about 9.74 total corners per game last season for both sides combined. For Newport County, their overall average was 9.98 total corners per match for both sides combined, against showing a statistically good shout based off last years data.
