Coritiba return to Brazil Serie A action hoping the mid-season World Cup break has helped them reset after a frustrating defeat before the suspension, but they face one of the toughest assignments in Brazilian football as league leaders Palmeiras visit the Couto Pereira.

Fernando Seabra’s side have enjoyed an encouraging first season back in the top flight, collecting 26 points from their opening 18 league matches to establish themselves comfortably in the top half of the standings. While survival remains the primary objective for a newly-promoted side, Coritiba have shown enough quality to dream of challenging for a Copa Sudamericana place if they can maintain their consistency throughout the second half of the campaign.

Their momentum was halted before the World Cup break, however, as Flamengo handed them a comprehensive 3-0 defeat at the Maracanã. It was arguably Coritiba’s poorest performance of the season, but the lengthy break has allowed Seabra valuable time to regroup, welcome players back from injury and prepare his squad for a demanding run of fixtures.

Home form has been solid rather than spectacular, with three wins, three draws and two defeats from eight matches at the Couto Pereira. Coritiba have generally been difficult to beat in front of their own supporters, but converting draws into victories remains an area for improvement if they are to remain in contention for continental qualification.

Much of their attacking threat has come from former Palmeiras forward Breno Lopes. The experienced winger has enjoyed an excellent campaign, contributing eight goals and an assist in just 15 Serie A appearances, and will undoubtedly be highly motivated against the club where he enjoyed some of the biggest moments of his career.

Standing in Coritiba’s way is a Palmeiras side once again setting the standard in Brazilian football.

Abel Ferreira’s men lead the Serie A standings with 41 points from 18 matches and carry a healthy seven-point advantage over nearest challengers Flamengo. Their remarkable consistency has once again made them favourites to lift another league title, while they remain firmly in contention in both the Copa Libertadores and Copa do Brasil.

Palmeiras entered the World Cup break on a 12-match unbeaten league run, with Paulinho’s winner against Chapecoense extending their impressive sequence. Ferreira has once again built a side capable of grinding out victories regardless of the opposition, combining defensive discipline with outstanding squad depth.

Recent history strongly favours Verdão in this fixture. Palmeiras have won each of the last four Serie A meetings with Coritiba, scoring 11 goals while conceding only once during that dominant run. Their tactical organisation and superior quality across the pitch have consistently proved too much for the Coxa in recent seasons.

Although Palmeiras will be without a couple of key players through suspension, their strength in depth means there should be little disruption to the starting XI. Andreas Pereira’s return adds further quality to midfield, while Jhon Arias and Ramon Sosa provide plenty of creativity and pace in the final third.

Coritiba should make life difficult, particularly on home soil, but Palmeiras possess the experience, momentum and winning mentality expected of genuine title contenders.
