Five year old Shotgun Shirley showed promise in bumpers including a win at Uttoxeter and a highly respectable second place in a listed event at Cheltenham in November. Sent hurdling the last twice and whilst it has been a slow start, it’s been highly progressive and that is likely to continue. Seventh on hurdle debut and fourth lto at Warwick behind Edith Pelham. Further improvement highly likely and both trip and ground look to be very suited as her best run in the listed event was on soft/heavy ground and gets similar here today. Yard are absolutely flying, 50% fortnightly strikerate and 44% strikerate in the last month is hard to ignore. Tom Cannon gets the ride who has a very similar profile to the stable recently and this combination looks a likely successful one here today. Pretty winnable race and Shotfun Shirley is bred to be much better than she has been, looks a very probable winner today.

Shotgun Shirley showed plenty of ability in bumpers, including a win at Uttoxeter and an excellent second in a Listed event at Cheltenham back in November. Since going hurdling, her progression has been steady rather than flashy, but improvement is clearly coming.

She finished seventh on hurdle debut before stepping forward nicely when fourth at Warwick last time out behind Edith Pelham. Further improvement looks highly likely here, with both trip and ground expected to suit, particularly given her best bumper form came on soft and heavy conditions.

Lucy Wadham’s yard are absolutely flying, operating at a 50% strike-rate over the past fortnight, and Tom Cannon gets the ride, a jockey who has been riding particularly well for the stable. In what looks a very winnable race, Shotgun Shirley looks the one to beat.

Wide open handicap here in the 7.30 at Wolverhampton and one who’s mark looks a little too tempting at 16/1 is White Umbrella. Seven year old who completed a double back in June last year off marks of 57 and then 61 who has since struggled in the three races since off marks of 68 68 and 67. Mark has now dropped to 65 which looks more promising in a race of this nature and has an ok draw from stall 7 today. No stranger to Wolverhampton and her double was at this track, along with two recent runs so has plenty of course experience to draw from and her wins were from stalls 5 and 6 so middle of the gates is no problem. Big positive today is the jockey, Jason Hart has been booked which is definitely an upgrade. He has ridden for the Kellet yard on a number of occasions previously with good results and so White Umbrella is in good hands, in a weak race and on a reduced mark. Looks capable of sneaking a place or better at a big price and fingers crossed she does.

A wide-open handicap and White Umbrella looks overpriced at 16/1. She completed a double at this track last June off marks of 57 and 61, but has since struggled off higher ratings in the high 60s.

Her mark has now dropped back to 65, which looks far more workable in a race of this nature. She’s no stranger to Wolverhampton, having won twice here and run several solid races since, and a middle draw in stall 7 looks perfectly fine based on previous successes.

The booking of Jason Hart is a big positive and represents a clear jockey upgrade. With proven course form, a reduced mark and a capable rider aboard, White Umbrella could easily outrun her odds and is capable of placing or better.

Two starts thus far for this youngster and fourth on both occasions. However lto was a pretty warm class 3 and a couple of useful horses ahead of John Galt that day. Was a little slow at the break and was swimming upstream as a result but absolutely flew home which was a big positive and with those two runs under his belt, looks a major player here. Good draw from stall 4, does have course experience and represents a yard going very well at the moment. The Osbornes have a 30% strikerate at the moment. Talented jockey booked in Billy Loughnane and when Billy and Jamie combine, they’ve won 29% of their races. Big step forward likely today and John Galt looks capable of taking this drop down in class.

Six year old who won his irish point and form under rules races since reads 342. Progressive on the figures and wasn’t far away with a tongue tie applied lto when second at Ludlow over 2m5f. Similar trip today on course debut at Southwell and should cope fine with the forecasted heavy ground. Afancy getaway remains open to plenty of further improvement and this race isn’t overly strong on paper, wouldn’t take a great deal more to be winning this. Represents a successful yard having a great year and has a great jockey aboard in Ben Jones. Both yard and jockey have a good record here when combining and Afancy Getaway looks set for a big run today.

Interesting race here in the 4.25 at Leopardstown and one looks set for a big run is eight year old The Wallpark from the Elliot yard. A talented hurdler with a rating of 155, has been sent chasing for the first time recently and whilst record sits at 0-5, things finally clicked lto at Navan in a Grade 2 when second. Likely to press on from that performance and in this chasing handicap debut today, looks pretty well treated 13lb below his hurdling mark. Represents a major irish yard and has a fantastic jockey aboard in Mark Walsh. Race looks pretty open and The Wallpark looks to have a fantastic chance in this particularly if jumping a little cleaner and more fluid.

Four year old Isla Bella might not have added to her number of wins recently, but has been very consistent in defeat and looks on the cusp of another victory, which could be today. Form of 55434 since January and this race looks arguably one of the weakest she’s ran in for a while. Returns to 6f today which is a positive and whilst being drawn wide isn’t overly ideal at times, this girl is more than happy to sit at the rear and come over the top which is likely what we will see today. Mark remains at 48 and this looks a very winnable mark for this youngster. Yard isn’t exactly firing at the moment, but the jockey switch to P J McDonald is an upgrade and he is riding phenomenally at the moment and has won over a third of his rides in the last couple of weeks. Major player and likely to be heavily involved in this weak race today.

John Galt has had just two starts to date, finishing fourth on both occasions, but there was plenty to like about his latest run. He contested a warm Class 3 last time, was slow from the stalls and had to come from well off the pace, yet finished strongly, flying home late.

Dropping down in class today, with those two runs now under his belt, a big step forward looks very likely. He has course experience, a good draw in stall 4, and represents an Osborne yard in excellent form, operating at a 30% strike-rate.

Billy Loughnane takes the ride and when teaming up with Jamie Osborne, the pair boast a 29% strike-rate. Everything points towards a major run.

Afancy Getaway

Afancy Getaway is a progressive six-year-old who won his Irish point and has shown steady improvement under Rules, with form figures of 342. He ran a strong race last time out at Ludlow, finishing second with a tongue-tie applied, suggesting there is still more to come.

He makes his course debut here over a similar trip and should handle the heavy ground, having shown promise on testing surfaces previously. This race doesn’t look overly strong and he remains open to further improvement.

From a top yard enjoying a fine season, and with Ben Jones aboard, who has an excellent record when combining with the Pauling yard, Afancy Getaway looks set for a big run.

The Wallpark is a talented hurdler rated 155, who has recently been sent chasing. While his chase record reads 0-5, there was clear improvement last time out when finishing second in a Grade 2 at Navan.

He makes his handicap chase debut here off a mark 13lb lower than his hurdling rating, which immediately catches the eye. Representing a top Irish yard and with Mark Walsh booked, he looks well treated if his jumping continues to improve.

This looks a fairly open race and The Wallpark has a fantastic chance of going very close.

Isla Bella

Isla Bella has been consistent without winning recently, but her form figures of 55434 since January suggest she’s not far away. This looks one of the weakest races she’s contested for some time, and she returns to her preferred 6f trip, which is a positive.

A wide draw isn’t ideal, but she’s happy to be ridden patiently and come late, which should suit the setup here. Her mark of 48 looks very workable and the switch to P J McDonald is a notable upgrade, with the jockey riding superbly at present.

Despite the yard not being in top form, Isla Bella looks a major player in this contest.
