Reason for Tip

Eight year old King Of Cong doesn’t have the most inspiring form of 0P2430 but there has been occasional glimpses of promise. Yard opted for cheekpieces for the last two runs which haven’t really delivered much however have decided to try blinkers today which may keep King Of Cong a little more focused. Big positive today is the ground, runs better the softer it is and has won on heavy so the forecast soft conditions are ideal and any further rain overnight or in the morning are only going to help. Trip is fine and whilst King Of Cong hasn’t won in almost two years, is very well handicapped and capable of a big run. Yard have a good chasing record and jockey Tom Midgley is no stranger to chase success either. Outside chance, but with a little improvement from the blinkers King Of Cong could run into the places or better at a big price.

Not the most obvious on recent form, but conditions could finally fall right. King Of Cong handles soft and heavy ground well, is very well handicapped, and switches into first-time blinkers which could sharpen him up significantly.

If the headgear sparks improvement, this eight-year-old is capable of outrunning huge odds, especially with any further rain.

Trappy little race in the first at Sandown today and one who looks set for a big run today is six year old Crackerjacque from the Honeyball yard. Well treated in this company and has won at this course this time last year on the same ground (heavy). Returned to action at Fontwell in November when making a winning return. Last of five lto here at Sandown in December, but that was a grade 2. Drops back to Class 3 company today and looks a major player at this level. Will love the ground, trip is fine and has the services of Sam Twiston-Davies back aboard. Yard have a good record here and Crackerjacque looks a likely winner.

Seven year old Afadil has a good record in this race with a win in 2024 and runner up last year. Looks well treated still and was running a very good race lto here at Musselburgh before making an error at the final flight which was arguably race costing. Does most of his running on good to soft and so the forecast ground is ideal for this boy and this renewal looks one that is winnable. Represents a top yard and has apprentice Freddie Keighley booked as jockey. Yard have a 36% strikerate here at Musselburgh which is a fantastic record and would be no surprise to see Afadil take this race again today.

This five year old is a talented and versatile individual with a good record on the flat and over obstacles. 4 wins from 12 runs in this discipline which includes lto when returning to flat racing. Looks strong and capable throughout that winning race last time and appears there is more to give when needed. Likely not seen the best of this five year old and looks set to put in another good performance here. Will be fine over this normal trip and represents a yard which might be small, but know how to turn out winners, currently running at a 20% strikerate int the last 30 days and Hector Crouch gets the ride. Hector has only ran once for a Stephens runner in the last couple of years which was the winning ride lto and that record may be improved today to 2 from 2. Major player, big chance.

Pretty open affair here in the 5.55 at Newcastle and Midnight’s Dream looks primed for a return to form today. Had been below par last year and as a result mark has dropped to a very tempting one. Returned to action after a shortish break lto at Kempton and looked to run a much better race in first time blinkers and was fifth that day. Remains well handicapped, should strip a little fitter for that run and yard have found a race that really isn’t that strong. Fine at this trip and has the services of Jack Mitchell today which is a positive jockey booking. Jack is riding very well at the moment and has a fantastic record both here at this track and when aboard Varian horses. 21% strikerate when riding for Varian here at Newcastle. Big chance.

A trappy opener at Sandown but Crackerjacque looks well placed back in calmer waters. He won here on heavy groundthis time last year and returned from a break with a solid Fontwell victory in November. His last run at Sandown came in Grade 2 company, which he found too hot, but this drop back into Class 3 looks ideal.

The ground will be right up his street, the trip poses no issues, and Sam Twiston-Davies is a positive jockey booking. Everything points towards a big run.

🏇 Afadil – 1.43 Musselburgh (7/2)

Trainer: Paul Nicholls | Jockey: Freddie Keighley

Afadil has an excellent record in this race, having won in 2024 and finished runner-up last year. He was travelling strongly here last time before a late mistake cost him dearly, suggesting he remains in good heart.

The forecast good to soft ground is ideal, this renewal looks winnable, and the Nicholls yard boasts a 36% strike-rate at Musselburgh. Another bold bid looks very likely.

🏇 Knight Templar – 3.20 Lingfield (9/2)

A versatile and progressive five-year-old who continues to improve with racing. Knight Templar returned to the Flat with a strong win last time, shaping as though there is more to come.

The Stephens yard are in fine form, running at a 20% strike-rate over the last 30 days, and Hector Crouch reunites with the horse after steering him to victory last time. Major player once again.

🏇 Midnight’s Dream – 5.55 Newcastle (13/2)

Midnight’s Dream looks dangerously well handicapped now after a below-par 2025 campaign. His return at Kempton in first-time blinkers was much more encouraging, finishing fifth and shaping as though fitness was the missing piece.

He should come on for that run, this race is not strong, and Jack Mitchell is a significant positive with a 21% strike-rate riding for Varian at Newcastle. Big chance of a return to form.
