Six year old Mighty Bandit has scored on the flat and over hurdles and finally made the switch to fences two starts ago at Newbury. Went close on chasing debut when second behind a very strong horse who has since enjoyed Grade 2 success. Improved for the run on second chase start lto at Newbury when scoring nicely and looks set to continue the great form and kick on for that win. The form from lto has worked out very well and Mighty Bandit could be a cut above the field today. From a good yard, talented and simple horse who has a fantastic jockey aboard in James Bowen. Bowen has a 26% strikerate here in the last two years and has won 20% of his rides for Warren Greatrex in the same period. Looks the winner.

Meetmebythesea looks a high-class novice chaser in the making and is taken as today’s NAP.

A winner of his first three hurdle starts, he confirmed his ability when finishing a strong third in the EBF Final at Sandown last spring. Sent chasing for the first time on seasonal return at Wetherby in November, he took to fences like a natural and won with plenty in hand despite a seven-month absence.

That performance suggested there is plenty more to come over the larger obstacles. He remains more unexposed than main market rival Fingle Bridge and should step forward again here. The Pauling yard are in good order, Ben Jones keeps the ride, and Meetmebythesea looks a very smart chaser in the making.

Reason for Tip

Nine year old Clonakilty used to reside with the Olly Murphy yard and was a multiple chase winner for that stable however since changing hands, didn’t run well at Ayr on seasonal return in November when last. That being said, does have ability and form at this trip and at 9 years old, may just need the run after 7 months off and so can be forgiven for lto. Should be fitter today on ground that will suit and so a chance is taken on Clonakilty returning to some better form. Has a decent jockey aboard in Sean Quinlan and whilst there is some decent horses in this race, on old form it is far from insurmountable and so could run into place money or better at a very nice price.

Bajan Bandit makes plenty of appeal at a price in this competitive Newcastle handicap.

He has been running consistently well in recent weeks, posting form figures of 1-2-2-5, and is only 4lb higher than his last winning mark. A major positive is the draw — stall 2 is ideal for a horse who likes to race prominently and control the tempo.

Hollie Doyle is a notable jockey upgrade and if allowed to get into a rhythm near the front, Bajan Bandit could prove very hard to peg back. At around 8/1, he looks a cracking value play to hit the frame at worst.

Pretty open affair here in the opener at Cheltenham and one who looks set to deliver is six year old Jordans Cross from the Honeyball stable. Largely very consistent with form of 121F1 going back to December 2024 and the fall here at Cheltenham two starts can be forgiven, a rare error. Bounced straight back at Doncaster lto in Doncaster when winning in fine style and looks a major player in this today. Has looked fantastic over fences since switched last year and is 2 from 3 in this discipline now with no sign of letting up the progression. Primed and ready for this and has a good jockey aboard in Sam Twiston-Davies. Big big chance to take chasing record to 3 wins from 4.

Seven year old Newton Tornado has form of F1P since chasing and whilst that’s a little too inconsistent for some, was unlucky when falling and can put a line through the race lto. Has proven ability when scoring at Bangor in nice style two starts ago and remains open to plenty of fence progression and with experience should come a little more reliability. This race is ripe for the picking and Newton Tornado is expected to bounce back from the poor run lto in December. Should enjoy this track and the soft ground is a positive, any further rain would only increase favourability. Dylan Johnston gets the ride and he has a stellar 33% strikerate at this track and is also on a 38% fortnightly strikerate. Lots to like, major player.

Now a ten year old, Paper Mill is very low mileage in rules events after pointing for most of his career and he has shown progression and improvement in every run in the last few years which culminated in success over C&D here back in November. Remains on a workable mark and will appreciate both trip and ground here today and is taken to produce another big run following the win last time out. This race isn’t particularly strong and is open for Paper Mill to take. Represents a shrewd yard with a good jockey aboard in Charlie Hammond and on paper this old timer is more than capable of completing the back to back.

Has been knocking on the door of late at Newcastle with course form reading 2232 since October and a win looks imminent off this mark, remains consistent and this race looks a good chance. Has a plum draw out of stall 1 today and likely to be out quick, if uncontested may take some catching here at this track where this five year old does plenty of good running. In form jockey Oisin McSweeney gets the ride who’s ridden 27% of rides to victory in the last fortnight. True Promise needs to take advantage of the draw today to avoid another place honour and is taken to do just that.
