Reason for Tip

Two Kempton wins have flanked three poor runs at Wolverhampton and form reads 19081 since September. Won in fine style lto and has been hit by a 5lb penalty for that run but looks a very smart prospect for completing a double in this race at Southwell which on paper isn’t overly formidable. The slight drop in trip is not a negative and Early Release has a reasonable enough draw in stall 6. Does his best running from the front, both wins were front running victories and so whilst stall 6 isn’t perfect, Early Release has the benefit of Oisin Murphy aboard who won atop this horse at Kempton back in September. Likely to be under instruction to start fast and take prominent position which if he can achieve, Early Release will be tough to reel in. Oisin has a good record here and has a 33% strikerate when riding for the Evans yard. Early Rise is taken to defy the penalty and score again.

⭐ NAP of the Day

Selenic – 6.00 Southwell (11/8)

Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott | Jockey: Luke Morris

Selenic stands out as the most unexposed runner in this field and looks the clear one to beat. She showed ability on debut at Kempton when narrowly denied, before winning with authority on her second start in February.

She returns from a break, but the Prescott yard boasts an excellent strike-rate with horses off 60+ days. The step up in trip is a strong positive on pedigree, and this Southwell surface should suit well. In a weak-looking handicap, Luke Morris is likely to ride her positively, and if Selenic is anywhere near fit, she could win this comfortably.

Reason for Tip

County Hurdle time at Cheltenham and with the bookies paying up to 6 places and the festival throwing up many a winner in the double digits, Secret Squirrel looks a fine option for a nice priced place opportunity and not discounted from winning this either. Form reads 3F1F3 and the falls were both at the final face when in contention. Clearly remains on a very capable mark and bounced back nicely last time at Wincanton when a not so distant third in the Grade 2 Kingwell. Will stay the trip, will be fine on the ground and likely to take a step forward today in what looks to be a rather open renewal. Jonathan Burke aboard for the Morrison trained seven year old and they have a good record together. Does need a bit of in race fortune and a clean round of jumping but capable of outrunning this price and that’s what he’s taken to do.

🎯 Dark Horse

Wadacre Moriarty – 5.00 Southwell (18/1)

Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Jockey: Callum Shepherd

Wadacre Moriarty makes his handicap debut after three uninspiring maiden runs, but that does not tell the full story. This is by far the easiest race he has contested, and he remains extremely unexposed compared to many of his older, exposed rivals.

The Johnston yard has a strong record with first-time handicappers, and this looks a carefully chosen entry point. Drawn well and partnered by Callum Shepherd, Wadacre Moriarty could take a sizeable step forward. At 18/1, he offers genuine each-way appeal and is not ruled out springing a surprise.

Seven year old Where’s Cato was a little inconsistent in novices and maidens and has looked much better since going chasing in handicaps. Won chasing/handicap debut at Huntingdon over a similar trip and wasn’t disgraced at all on second chase start lto at Plumpton. Clearly remains on a workable mark and looks a major player today in first time cheekpieces. Ground is fine and makes first start today for new stable, the Williams yard. Conor Ring retains the ride and this race doesn’t look overly warm and shouldn’t take a great deal of winning. Where’s Cato looks set for another big run and wouldn’t be a surprise winner. Good chance.

Completed a quickfire double in December at Southwell and over C&D here. Upped in class lto and struggled on the softer ground so can be forgiven for that poor result. Very likely to bounce back today back at Doncaster on good ground which he loves. Is on career high mark but has been running very well for the last couple of months and has to be taken very seriously back in Class 3 company today. Only a mark 6 higher than his 8 length dominance back here two starts ago and looks to be capable of winning still. Ciaran Gethings aboard is a jockey change, but not a negative one, has a good record here at Doncaster with a 20% strikerate in the last two years and is also riding regular winners recently. Big player.

Reason for Tip

Interesting race here headed by Ian Williams Beauzon who completed a six timer lto. However, a chance is taken on five year old Macarone from the Furtado yard. Macarone won twice over course and distance last year and after a few sub par runs elsewhere at 5f and 7f, returned to 6f here at Wolverhampton lto when a not distant fourth. Looking a little well treated currently and has a big chance today from a plum draw in stall 1. Likely to start well from this draw and runs his best races from the front and will get the chance to do that today in a race that’s very suited. 10/1 looks a shade too high and more than capable of putting in a run much better than those odds and not written out of winning this with in form Billy Loughnane aboard today who has a fortnightly strikerate of 35% and a solid course record to boot. Good chance.

In a race of horses struggling to find form, there is one stand out who isn’t struggling to contest recently and that’s five year old Filly One from the Oldroyd yard who has recorded two wins and a second in last five starts and 112 in last three AW starts. The second place lto over C&D was only a head and remains on a very competitive mark. Well drawn in stall 3 today at a course this five year old loves and looks like Filly One could be hard to peg back today. When yard and jockey have combined at this course in the last 2 years they share a 31% strikerate together and that’s an impressive statistic. Filly One looks the likely winner.

Alfa Patisserie took a significant step forward on handicap debut last time out at Newcastle, improving sharply from three underwhelming maiden runs to score with authority. That win looked anything but fluky, with the filly travelling strongly and finding plenty when asked.

She runs over the same mile trip here on her Wolverhampton debut and is 2lb better off with the runner-up from Newcastle. With the next best in the betting carrying a stiff 6lb penalty, this looks a race ripe for further progression. Sean Levey takes over again, and another positive ride could see Alfa Patisserie go back-to-back. Strong contender with more to come.

Diamondonthehill – 3.45 Wolverhampton (4/1)

Now eight, Diamondonthehill may not quite possess the spark of his younger days, but recent runs suggest a return to competitiveness. He remains on a very workable mark and drops back into a class he has previously handled well.

The last time he ran in this grade at Wolverhampton, he finished a close third in a stronger contest than today’s. Drawn well in stall 3 and partnered by the excellent Saffie Osborne, Diamondonthehill looks primed to deliver a big run at a track he enjoys. Solid each-way claims and not ruled out winning.

Circuit Breaker – 4.15 Wolverhampton (7/2)

Trainer: Jonjo & A J O’Neill | Jockey: Jack Dace

Circuit Breaker has contested far deeper races than this throughout his career and showed clear signs last time that a win may not be far away. He finished a close second in an apprentice handicap here at Wolverhampton, shaping as though the race would come to him with a slightly longer trip.

That step up in distance today looks a definite positive. Jack Dace takes the ride again and has a solid record around this track. With the form holding up well and the class drop suiting, Circuit Breaker has a major chance of getting his head back in front.

Berlinetta – 8.00 Southwell (5/1)

Trainer: William Haggas | Jockey: Jason Hart

Berlinetta takes on a short-priced favourite here but brings significant untapped potential to the table. A £250,000 yearling, she has shown only modest form in three maiden runs, but this represents a very lenient handicap entry pointfor such a well-bred filly.

The break is a minor concern, but the Haggas yard excels with horses returning fresh. Her sire boasts an excellent record at Southwell, and a plum draw in stall 1 is another major positive. Handicap progression can often be sharp at this level, and Berlinetta looks capable of improving past this field at a fair price.
