Gyori v Rapid Vienna

Match Overview

Hungarian hosts Gyori will head into Thursday night’s 1st leg tie against Austrian visitors Rapid Vienna in confident mood as Balazs Borbely’s side are fresh from inflicting a 7-2 win away from home at MTK Budapest in the domestic Fizz Liga over the weekend, while the bigger picture shows the home side still remain unbeaten in the Hungarian top flight.

Gyori have reached the play-off stage of this season’s Conference League thanks to victories gained over Pyunik 4-3 on aggregate and AIK 3-2 on aggregate and the hosts have suffered just one defeat in their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Rapid Vienna also remain unbeaten so far in the Austrian Bundesliga this season having won twice and involved in a draw, the latter being a disappointing 0-0 stalemate at home against SCR Altach, and they too have progressed through the earlier qualifying rounds of this season’s Conference League.

Wins against Decic 6-2 on aggregate and Dundee United (in a penalty shoot-out) have earned Peter Stöger’s side a place in the play-off stage of this competition but Rapid Vienna may find Gyori a tough nut to crack on home soil on Thursday night.

Team News & Storylines

Gyori will be without long-term absentee goalkeeper Balazs Megyeri with a cruciate injury but otherwise Balazs Borbely has a fully fit squad to pick from. Their summer signing, striker Peter Tischler, has impressed in early fixtures and could play a key role again.

Rapid Vienna have no fewer than six players currently in the treatment room including centre-backs Marcelin, Scholler and Groller along with forward Noah Bischof. They’ll need talisman Guido Burgstaller to lead from the front with much of their creativity flowing through midfield man Marco Grüll.

Lausanne Sport will be looking to pick up a third win on the trot in all competitions on Thursday night when they entertain Turkish club Besiktas at their Stade de la Tuiliere in the 1st leg tie of this Conference League play-off clash having registered recent victories over Kazakhstan side Astana and Vevey-Sports.

Lausanne manager Peter Zeidler will be pleased with two straight wins on home soil in the Conference League as well against Vardar 5-0 and Astana 3-1 respectively and he’ll be wanting more of the same here.

Besiktas find themselves in the ‘last chance saloon’ as the Turkish outfit have already been bundled out of the Europa League by Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in a heavy 6-2 thrashing in the previous qualifying round.

However, Besiktas have responded in positive fashion as Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side have won their last two games on the trot albeit both on home soil against Irish club St Patrick’s Athletic and Eyupspor respectively.

Lausanne Sport only have two injuries in the form of midfielder Alvyn Sanches and forward Enzo Kana-Biyik but otherwise the hosts look in good shape. Zeidler has been boosted by the form of winger Gabriel Barès, who has provided three assists in his last four games.

Besiktas are expected to be missing left-back David Jurasek together with the attacking pair of Ernest Muci (hip) and Mustafa Hekimoglu (muscle tear). Much of the responsibility will fall on veteran forward Cenk Tosun, while new summer recruit Ante Rebic could be key in turning their attacking fortunes around.

Match Overview

Hibernian may have lost on the night to Serbian outfit FK Partizan in a 3-2 loss at Easter Road in the return leg of the previous qualifying round in the Conference League but having already secured a 2-0 win in the 1st leg, the Scottish Premiership side eventually prevailed and progressed into this play-off round.

A domestic win in the Premiership against Dundee and a League Cup victory over Livingston will give David Gray’s side a welcome and timely boost ahead of this 1st leg tie at Easter Road while Hibs have suffered just two losses in their last seven games, picking up three wins and two draws in the process.

Legia Warsaw have dropped down into the Conference League after being beaten 5-3 on aggregate in the Europa League by Cypriot side AEK Larnaca, and recent results suggest Edward Iordănescu’s side could find it tough going in Edinburgh on Thursday night.

The Polish visitors have lost both of their last two matches on the road with defeats at the hands of AEK Larnaca 4-1 in the Europa League and Wisla Plock in the Polish Ekstraklasa over the weekend.

Hibs manager David Gray will be hoping midfielder Jamie McGrath shakes off a niggle in time for Thursday’s clash. Summer arrival Will Fish is expected to partner Paul Hanlon in defence, while striker Dylan Vente remains a threat in attack after scoring twice in August already.
