Luton v AFC Wimbledon – League One Betting Preview & Tips

Fixture: Friday 1 August 2025, 8:00pm
Venue: Kenilworth Road
Competition: Sky Bet League One opening weekend of the 2025/26 season

The EFL is back and this Friday night clash between Luton Town and AFC Wimbledon should get the new season off to a flyer.

It is a rare meeting between two sides heading in opposite directions. Luton were relegated from the Championship last season after a chaotic year that saw them fall from the Premier League to League One in the space of 12 months. Despite the financial boost of promotion and a proven manager in Rob Edwards, results never picked up. A poor start, key injuries and a mid-season change in the dugout led to a second consecutive relegation. They now begin life in League One under new boss Matt Bloomfield.

Bloomfield has been forced to rebuild, with several key players moving on including Alfie Doughty and Carlton Morris. Recruitment has been smart for this level and the core squad still looks strong. A quick start in front of their home fans will be the priority.

Wimbledon come into the new campaign full of confidence after winning promotion via the League Two play-offs. Manager Johnny Jackson oversaw a defensively solid season, with loanee keeper Owen Goodman keeping 20 clean sheets and key contributions from Joe Lewis, Alistair Smith and Neufville. That side has now been broken up. Goodman has left, Neufville has joined Bradford and other squad players have also moved on. While new signings have arrived, it remains to be seen if this side can hit the same heights against stronger League One opposition.

We have taken all of this into account and built a Bet Builder tip we think offers strong value on opening night. With Luton adjusting to life in a lower division and Wimbledon fielding a reshaped eleven, there are angles worth backing.

Motherwell v Rangers Bet Builder Tip

Both teams to score - Yes

Both Teams To Score
6/10

Reason for Tip

BTTS has landed in 14 of the last 17 meetings between Motherwell and Rangers, including a 2-2 draw at Fir Park last season. Motherwell have scored in each of their last five matches against Rangers and have started the new season in strong scoring form. Maswanhise has four goals in four League Cup matches, while Rangers conceded in 15 of 19 Premiership away games last term. Their recent Champions League qualifiers also showed defensive vulnerabilities.

Over 2.5 Match Goals

Over/Under Match Goals
2/5

Reason for Tip

Four of Rangers’ last five wins away to Motherwell saw over 2.5 goals. Motherwell had the highest Over 2.5 Goals rate in the league last season, landing in 27 of 38 games. Rangers are playing a more expansive style under Russell Martin, which increases the chances of open play and multiple goals at both ends.

Motherwell v Rangers

Over 9.5 Corners

Over / Under Corners
1/2

Reason for Tip

Rangers averaged over six corners per game last season. Motherwell matches regularly featured double-digit totals, and Fir Park’s narrow dimensions naturally lead to more blocked shots and crosses. Rangers also conceded 15 corners across their two-legged European tie against Panathinaikos. With both teams expected to attack, this line looks generous.

Over 3.5 Cards

Over/Under Cards
4/9

Reason for Tip

Steven McLean is seen as a lenient referee, but this game brings intensity and recent card history. Rangers picked up multiple bookings in all four meetings with Motherwell last season, including 2+ cards in every league match. Motherwell are physical at home and press high, especially under a new manager. Rangers averaged over 2.1 cards per match in all competitions last season. With players like Slattery and Diomande patrolling midfield, we expect plenty of fouls and at least four bookings.

Luton v AFC Wimbledon – 6/4 Bet Builder Tip

1. Luton Town– To win the match
We expect to see a bounce back from Luton Town this season. They have lost key players but ultimately they still have quality beyond the league 1 level. This is not to suggest that they will walk all over Wimbledon, but we believe that Luton having had a full pre-season to implement manager Matt Bloomfields ideas that they will pull through and get the win in a close game.

2. Nahki Wells 1+ Shot on Target
Following on from the Luton to win suggestion, we then take a look at who will likely be leading the line for Luton. Nahki Wells was somewhat of a significant signing for the Hatters after they lost Carlton Morris to Derby County. If Luton are to be successful they will need Wells to show form of his younger days. We think he is a good shout for a shot on target.

3. Over 2.5 cards

The Kenilworth road atmosphere on opening night of the season should cause for the same level of intensity on the pitch. Both teams are known for a little bit of the dark arts and also being quite cynical at times, stopping counter attacks. 41% of Luton’s matches last season featured 3 or more total cards, and 62% had 4 or more total cards. AFC Wimbledon was considered among clubs with relatively poor discipline (higher points in disciplinary rankings), suggesting they were ABOVE league average in bookings. Over 2.5 cards looks a solid selection here.

4. Over 7.5 corners

Matches involving Luton averaged 11.65 overall per game. Matches involving Wimbledon last season averaged 9.22 overall per game. Over 7.5 corners still gives us a good margin for error even with the stats to back it up on the previous year.
