Belgium v Senegal Preview

Belgium enter the knockout rounds as Group winners, but Rudi Garcia will know that significant improvements are required if the Red Devils are to mount a serious challenge for World Cup glory.

The world’s ninth-ranked nation finished top of their section with five points after opening the tournament with draws against Egypt and Iran before finally finding top gear in an emphatic 5-0 demolition of New Zealand. That convincing victory not only secured first place but also restored confidence after a pair of underwhelming displays that had raised doubts about Belgium’s credentials.

Garcia’s experienced squad still possesses plenty of attacking quality. Kevin De Bruyne remains the creative heartbeat of the side, while Leandro Trossard has emerged as Belgium’s leading scorer at the tournament with two goals. Combined with the pace of Jeremy Doku and the physical presence of Charles De Ketelaere, Belgium have shown they are capable of overwhelming opponents once their attacking combinations click.

Defensively, however, there are still question marks. Belgium have managed just one clean sheet in the tournament and have looked vulnerable whenever opponents have pressed aggressively in midfield. Against stronger opposition, those lapses could prove costly.

Having suffered the disappointment of a group-stage exit in Qatar four years ago after finishing third in 2018, Belgium are desperate to prove that this new generation is capable of making another deep World Cup run.

Standing in their way are Senegal, who arrive full of confidence after producing one of the performances of the tournament on the final group matchday.

Back-to-back defeats against France and Norway had left Pape Thiaw’s men facing elimination, but the Lions of Teranga responded magnificently by thrashing Iraq 5-0 to snatch qualification as one of the tournament’s best third-placed nations.

That victory was historic, making Senegal the first African nation to score five goals in a single World Cup match, and it demonstrated exactly why they remain one of Africa’s strongest international sides.

While consistency has been an issue throughout the group stage, Senegal possess enough pace, power and technical quality to trouble any defence. Ismaila Sarr has been outstanding throughout the competition, while Sadio Mane continues to provide invaluable experience on the biggest stage.

The African side will also draw inspiration from their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2002, while a place in the last 16 here would equal their second-best ever World Cup performance.

This fixture also marks the first-ever meeting between Belgium and Senegal, adding another fascinating chapter to an already intriguing Round of 32 encounter.

France v Sweden Preview

France have looked every inch one of the favourites to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup after cruising through Group I with a perfect record, collecting nine points from a possible nine while scoring 10 goals and conceding only twice.

Didier Deschamps’ side completed their flawless group campaign with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Norway, a result that highlighted the frightening depth available to the French manager. Ousmane Dembele stole the headlines with a superb hat-trick, proving Les Bleus possess match-winners all over the pitch rather than relying solely on captain Kylian Mbappe.

That attacking depth is precisely why France remain among the bookmakers’ leading contenders to reclaim the trophy they won in 2018 before finishing runners-up in Qatar four years later. While critics have questioned whether Deschamps’ side can become too passive without possession against elite opposition, few teams have found a way to contain arguably the most dangerous forward line left in the competition.

France now begin the knockout rounds at the stadium that will also host the World Cup Final, and they will be determined to ensure this is only the first of several appearances at the venue. However, the route to glory promises to be anything but straightforward, with potential meetings against Germany, Spain and either the Netherlands or Morocco lying ahead if they continue progressing.

Standing in their way are Sweden, who reached the Round of 32 after an inconsistent group-stage campaign that ultimately yielded four points.

Graham Potter’s side began brightly with victory over Tunisia before suffering a heavy 5-1 defeat to the Netherlands, eventually securing qualification courtesy of a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Japan on the final matchday.

The Scandinavians have shown flashes of their attacking quality throughout the tournament, scoring seven goals in three matches, but defensive frailties remain a concern after conceding seven times during the group phase.

Those inconsistencies have largely mirrored Sweden’s qualification campaign, where they regularly mixed impressive performances with frustrating lapses in concentration. While reaching the knockout stages already represents an achievement after missing three of the previous four World Cups, they now face arguably the toughest possible test.

History is also against Blågult. France have won four of the previous five meetings between the nations, while three of Sweden’s last four defeats against Les Bleus have come by a single-goal margin, suggesting they are capable of making life uncomfortable even if the odds remain firmly stacked against them.

With Mbappe, Dembele, Michael Olise and Desire Doue all operating behind one of Europe’s strongest midfields, France will expect to dominate possession from the first whistle. Sweden’s best hope may lie in quick transitions through the pace of Anthony Elanga and the clinical finishing of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.

Bet Builder Breakdown

PSG to Qualify
PSG are slight favourites to progress and looked composed in their quarter-final win over Bayern. They’ve kept four clean sheets in five tournament games and top the competition for possession at nearly 67 percent. With their defensive shape, technical midfield and fast wide players, they look well set to edge this.

Both Teams to Score
Real Madrid have scored in all five Club World Cup games so far and pose a constant threat through Vinícius Jr and Bellingham. PSG have enough firepower to respond and are unlikely to sit back. This has the makings of an open, attacking semi-final and both teams should get on the scoresheet.

Achraf Hakimi 1+ Shot on Target
Hakimi is consistently involved down the right and regularly gets into shooting positions. He had efforts on target in both previous rounds and is always a threat when PSG dominate possession. With Super Sub in play, this leg remains valid even if he comes on late.

Over 2.5 Goals
There’s too much attacking quality on the pitch for this not to open up. Recent clashes between these sides have regularly seen three or more goals, and with both teams built to attack rather than sit on leads, three or more is a realistic outcome.

Over 2.5 Match Cards
This is a huge occasion — a semi-final between two world-class sides with serious money, silverware and bragging rights on the line. There’s no room for passengers and no time for passengers. Expect tactical fouls, frustration, and high intensity challenges, especially if it gets cagey in the second half. Even without a strong card trend in earlier rounds, this sort of knockout tie usually sees the bookings pile up.
