West Ham United return to Premier League action under pressure as they host fellow strugglers Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium.

The Hammers’ FA Cup dreams were dashed in heartbreaking fashion last weekend after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Leeds, while their last league outing ended in a 2-0 loss at Aston Villa. That result leaves them 18th in the table, just one point from safety, meaning this fixture could prove pivotal in the relegation battle.

Set-piece defending has been a major concern for West Ham, having conceded 17 league goals from dead-ball situations this season — the joint-highest in the division. However, their home form has stabilised somewhat, losing just one of their last six Premier League games at the London Stadium (W1 D4).

Encouragingly for the hosts, they have won their last five Premier League home meetings against Wolves — a psychological edge that could be crucial in such a high-pressure clash.

Wolves, meanwhile, have shown signs of life after a disastrous autumn run. Since late December, they have lost just four of their last 13 league fixtures (W3 D6), tightening up defensively and finding more consistency in front of goal.

Rob Edwards’ side have scored exactly two goals in each of their last three league matches and have picked up impressive results against Aston Villa and Liverpool in recent weeks. However, they remain bottom of the table and 13 points from safety, meaning their margin for error is minimal.

With both sides desperate for points and capable of scoring, this contest could be open and intense.

Seven year old Jasko Des Dames has patchy form at various courses but returned to form when a strong fifth in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham last month. Likes to front run which is fine in this and the trip is the same flat 2 miles which suits this boy perfectly. Represents a trainer with a good record in this race with wins in 2019 and 2023 and whilst been a little off the boil since, is a respected yard and has a top jockey in Darragh O’Keefe aboard. Jasko Des Dames is a strong jumper and that pays dividends here at Aintree and this less demanding track may be right up his street and we will find out today on course debut. This race is open and there for the taking and Jasko Des Dames is entitled to have a say here. Capable of outrunning this price.

Three year old Burke trained Polly Darling was very green indeed on debut at Thirsk last April and managed to run on nicely to win comfortably. Entitled to come on a lot for that experience and further progression highly likely. Burke has a fantastic record with his two year olds so there is a potential question mark as to why this horse only ran once last year. We have seen this before with a couple of his with no negatives and perhaps just had the makings of a better three year and kept it low mileage. Has a good draw in stall 1 and if going well fresh could simple be too good for this lot today. Yard and jockey have a good record at this track and could be adding another winner to the form book with Polly Darling today. Looks the winner.

The opening race of the Aintree festival and Maestro Conti looks set for another good performance today. Has shown great promise so far with wins in France and then won first two starts for the Skeltons at Kempton and Cheltenham in a Grade 2. Went on to contest the Triumph at Cheltenham last month and was a very strong second and so there is no quandaries around the form of this youngster and remains open to further progression. First run at Aintree should pose no great problems and this sharper track may even work in his favour. Ground and trip are ideally suited and yard and jockey enjoying a fine time of it at the moment. They don’t have the most mind blowing record at Aintree but Maetro Conti has the makings of a very good horse and will jump well which is important round here and should be very heavily involved in the closing stages. Capable winner.

Eight year old Always Busy is a good chaser but can be inconsistent, reflected in the form of F35P2. Has multiple wins in this discipline and is on a very workable mark. Goes up in trip somewhat notably to 3m4f and on pedigree that should be ok and should fine the slower pace of this race in his favour. This isn’t a warm looking lineup and won’t take a huge deal of winning and if coping with the extra distance, Always Busy should have a big say in this. Yard ticking along nicely and Jack Tudor aboard is a strong booking, Jack is riding very well at the moment and producing lots of winning rides. Question mark over trainer and jockeys success at this course at it isn’t strong reading but this horse looks to have a real chance here and so that can be forgiven and overlooked. Decent chance.

Four year old Tilted Kilt failed to win in 2025 and is a little complicated at times. However, has not been seen since September last year and the break is positive. Goes very well fresh and runs in a notably lower class today compared to lto. Trip is fine and has ran well here at Southwell previously. On a very attractive mark and capable of producing a big run today. Top jockey aboard in Cieren Fallon and the yard are probably overdue a winner. Tilted Kilt runs his best races from the back so we are likely to see him sat off the pace and challenging late which can work very well at this course, interesting race and this horse looks to have a real chance at a nice price.

Four year old Gold Star Hero seems to thrive on the AW and made it two wins from three runs on the surface lto at Chelmsford. Only gone up 4lb for that win which doesn’t look enough to curtail chances today and has a plum draw from stall 2. Largely consistent type who should be heavily involved again here today and would be no surprise to see him follow up today and complete the double. Yard in scintillating form with a 35% strikerate in the last 30 days and they have a fantastic record at this course. Hector Crouch returns to the saddle which is no negative and when Hector and Bell combine at this course they’ve won over half their races in the last 2 years. Massive chance.

Julian Schuster’s men may have suffered late heartbreak in a 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich at the weekend, conceding twice in stoppage time, but their European home record is formidable. Freiburg have won nine straight European matches at Europa-Park Stadion since losing to West Ham in 2023-24 — a sequence that underlines just how difficult they are to beat on home soil.

Celta Vigo, meanwhile, have taken a more dramatic route to the last eight. After finishing 16th in the league phase, they eliminated PAOK in the playoffs before overcoming Lyon in the round of 16. A 1-1 home draw was followed by a clinical 2-0 win in France, capitalising on an early red card to secure progression.

Domestically, Claudio Giraldez’s side are flying high after a spirited 3-2 comeback win at Valencia, leaving them sixth in La Liga and within touching distance of the Champions League spots.

However, Celta’s record in Germany is mixed, losing two of their last three UEFA away games there. Facing a Freiburg side unbeaten in nine European home matches presents a stern test.
