Seven-year-olds have an exceptional record, winning 16 of the last 19 runnings. Stamina is the critical variable; the 3m 1f trip on the Old Course is unrelenting, and 18 of the last 19 winners had already finished in the first two in a Grade 1 or Grade 2 chase earlier in the season. Course experience is another significant factor, with 11 of the last 12 winners having previously run at Cheltenham, and seven of those having already recorded a victory at the track.

The 2026 renewal features a competitive field of 16 runners, an unusually large turnout for a race that often attracts smaller, elite groups. Romeo Coolio is widely regarded as one of the “bankers” of the week. Having shown exceptional jumping in shorter races, however he is unknown over this trip and the fitting of the hood by the yard somewhat hinders positivity. However, his profile aligns with the “high-class novice” archetype, and his ability to stay on strongly suggests the Cheltenham hill will be an asset rather than a hindrance. Final Demand also carries strong credentials into the race. Despite social media rumors regarding his fitness, his owner has confirmed he is in peak condition, and his time-figure data from the Dublin Racing Festival places him among the elite of his division. Another potential threat is Oscars Brother, who has been consistently supported in the ante-post markets and for good reason.

Formerly the Coral Cup, the BetMGM Cup is one of the most fiercely contested handicap hurdles in the National Hunt calendar. Contested over two miles and five furlongs with 10 hurdles, it typically attracts a maximum field of 26 runners. The race is known for its unpredictability and high-speed nature, often resulting in blanket finishes and long-priced upsets. The BetMGM Cup is an outlier at the Festival because of the poor performance of favorites. In the last 22 years, only one favorite has emerged victorious (Dame De Compagnie in 2020). Instead, the race is the domain of double-digit odds; 10 of the last 17 winners started at 16/1 or bigger, with shocks as high as 50/1 being recorded in recent seasons. The most successful profile for this race is a second-season hurdler—a horse that has moved out of novice company but remains unexposed to the handicapper.

For 2026, Dan Skelton, who has mastered this race with the likes of Langer Dan, saddles Kateira, who does fit the profile of well-handicapped, classy stayer. Storm Heart is another notable contender for Willie Mullins; despite carrying a large weight, he is a tough, high-quality individual capable of producing a championship-level performance in handicap company but he faces a historical wall of statistical resistance against favorites. Jingko Blue is of interest, whose drop back in class over hurdles could be viewed as a tactical masterstroke by the Henderson team.

The Cross Country Chase is a marathon event run over three miles and five furlongs. It is a unique spectacle, requiring horses to negotiate 32 varied obstacles that differ from the standard fences and hurdles used elsewhere on the track. After the 2024 renewal was canceled due to a waterlogged course, the race returned in 2025 and reaffirmed its status as a haven for specialists and former Grade 1 stars. The Cross Country Chase is a race where experience and course familiarity are non-negotiable. Ten of the last 11 winners were aged eight or older, reflecting the need for a mature, clever jumper to navigate the banks and ditches. Irish trainers have a vice-like grip on this event, winning 10 of the last 12 renewals. Gordon Elliott, in particular, has made the race his own, saddling six winners in the last 11 seasons.
The 2026 race is expected to be a duel between the defending champion, Stumptown, and the Elliott-trained Favori De Champdou. Stumptown was an impressive winner as the 5/2 favorite in 2025 and returns off a mark only 3lb higher. His victory in the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup in December 2025 proved his continued aptitude for the course. However, Favori De Champdou heads the challenge for Gordon Elliott, fitting the age profile (9) and class criteria required for this unique test. Other potential “spoilers” in the field include Desertmore House, a proven stayer with high-level chasing form, and Vanillier from the Cromwell yard who returns here after a win last time out at Punchestown.

The feature race of Day 2 is the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the premier two-mile championship for steeplechasers. With 13 fences to be jumped on the Old Course, it is widely regarded as the most thrilling spectacle of the week, rewarding horses that can jump at maximum speed without losing momentum. The winner of the 2026 renewal will take home approximately £225,080 from a total prize fund of £400,000. Success in the Champion Chase is almost exclusively reserved for elite Grade 1 performers. Eleven of the last 12 winners had already recorded a victory at the Grade 1 level before arriving at Cheltenham. Age is also a defining factor, with 10 of the last 12 winners aged between seven and nine. While favorites have been somewhat unreliable—winning only four of the last 12—it is rare for a true outsider to win, as 11 of the last 12 winners came from the first three in the betting.

Majborough enters the 2026 renewal as the standout from a timing perspective, having recorded a massive 179 speed figure in his Leopardstown destruction of the field. While he has been prone to jumping errors in the past, his performance in cheekpieces has solidified his status as the clear market leader. L’Eau Du Sud is probably the alternative to the favorite, with trainer Dan Skelton keeping him fresh for this target since his course and distance win in the Shloer Chase. However, I think we can avoid reading too much into this, Majborough should run out the winner, even if his price is very short.

The penultimate race of the day is the Grand Annual, the oldest race in the Festival’s history and a high-speed gallop over two miles. It is notoriously difficult to solve, as the frenetic pace often results in jumping errors and dramatic shifts in the finishing order. The Grand Annual favors horses that carry a specific weight range, typically between 10st 11lb and 11st 6lb. Historical results show that the race is unfriendly to favorites, with only two winning in the last 12 years. Most winners are aged between seven and nine, matching the physical peak required for such a fast run event. Crucially, only one of the last 12 winners won their previous race, suggesting that a horse coming off a break or an understated performance is often the one to follow.

The 2026 betting is headed by Be Aware 9/2, Jazzy Matty 11/2 and Vanderpoel at 12/1.Vanderpoel, trained by Ben Pauling, arrives on the back of easy wins at Sandown and Ascot, though history suggests that “winning form” is not necessarily a prerequisite for this race. Be Aware, who has shown marked improvement over fences and chased home the high-class Lulamba earlier in the season looks a very solid contender and may take some beating. However Calico is a notable each-way outsider at 25/1, as his recent fourth-place finish is likely stronger than it appears on paper and Calico has a good history here at Cheltenham.

Day 2 concludes with the Champion Bumper, the only race at the Festival without any obstacles. It is designed to test the flat speed and potential of young horses aged four to six, many of whom will go on to be the Grade 1 hurdlers and chasers of the future. Previous winners like Cue Card, Envoi Allen, and Champagne Fever serve as a testament to the race’s status as a nursery for future legends. Willie Mullins has an unrivaled record in this race, having won it 14 times since its inception in 1992. However, he often saddles multiple runners, and the market frequently struggles to identify the correct one; five of his previous winners started at odds of 11/1 or higher, including two at 25/1. A non-negotiable trend for the Bumper is current form: every winner in the last 15 years won their final race before arriving at Cheltenham.

Love Sign d’Aunou is the current favorite at 4/1, leading a strong battalion for Willie Mullins. However, the most intriguing runner may be Quiryn, a four-year-old with a largely flat pedigree who won with immense ease on debut at Naas. While four-year-olds have an historically poor record, Paul Townend has noted that Quiryn is not a raw jumping type and should be treated as a classy exception to the rule. Gordon Elliott’s challenge is led by Keep Him Company, who won with considerable authority at Leopardstown and is a strong candidate. Elliott also saddles Broadway Ted, a 16/1 each-way option who has already secured a victory in a Graded bumper, matching another key historical trend.

15 career runs without a win is hardly a statistic to boast about but there’s a couple of key positives today which make Tuscan Point a little bit of a dark horse at 12/1. Firstly this is not a strong race, it’s wide open for the taking. Tuscan Point has changed hands since lto and this represents first run for the Kirby yard. Stable changes can spark improvement and so a chance is taken on this four year old. Has a fantastic draw from stall 3 and Kirby’s have opted for an apprentice today in Taryn Langley who takes off 5lb with her apprentice allowance making Tuscan Point’s mark very interesting indeed. Change of headgear also reached for by the yard. Does need to find a little extra from what we’ve seen but today’s race looks an opportunity for Tuscan Point and with good positioning at the break, could run on strongly today off this weight. Chance.

Small 5 runner race here in the 6.30 at Newcastle and the one who looks the obvious answer is four year old Burke trained Party Bear. Won at Lingfield in January over this trip off a mark of 70. Slightly disappointing over C&D two starts ago on first run off 73 but improved very nicely in a much warmer class 3 lto at Lingfield when third of eleven. Back to the calmer class 5 company today and looks a major player back in this sphere. Draw not overly relevant in a small field and we are likely to see Party Bear take up his usual prominent position. Will take some pegging back and if given an uncontested lead could run away with it. Yard and jockey both have brilliant records here and Party Bear looks every bit the winner in waiting today.

One of the very few horses in this field that’s consistent and reliable with form of 12321. Versatile six year old who’s capable on both flat and over the obstacles and after two runs on the flat recently returns to hurdles here today. Decent course form including a second here back in October over this trip. Remains on a very workable mark and looks a cut above this lot today. Represents a shrewd and successful yard and has a good jockey aboard in Thomas Bellamy. Unlikely to be far away at all and looks a very likely winner at a course he enjoys and on ground that is ideally suited.

Pretty open looking Brown Advisory with the seven year old Romeo Coolio heading the market at 2/1. Far too short in my opinion for a horse not particularly suited to this trip and fitted with a hood. However, that means nice prices elsewhere and one who takes the fancy is six year old Kaid D’authie from the Muillins yard. Has all the attributes of a Brown Advisory winner with a good engine and fluid jumping. Has taken to chasing like a duck to water and is two wins and a second in this sphere. Pulled up over hurdles here 12 months ago but looks a prime candidate for the win today. Trip is a little unknown, but on pedigree and from what we’ve seen should suit and represents a top yard with a great record at the Festival and has Mark Walsh aboard who knows how to win here too, did so yesterday also. Big chance.

Failed to build on his win on handicap debut last June at Lingfield but has not been disgraced in defeat since and has been lightly raced with only three runs since. Returns from a break here and is capable of going well fresh and is on what looks to be a very workable mark. Has a wide draw but not overly concerning in a 2 mile race and has plenty of time to get positioned for the break. Makes AW and stable debut today which could spark further improvement. Good jockey aboard in Callum Rodriguez who is no stranger to course success and this race is not a strong one. Leading contender and likely winner.

Four year old Rockin’ The Boat might be winless, but this is by far and away the easiest race she’s ran in and looks pretty dangerous here on AW debut. Has contested some warm Class 2 maidens previously and ran more than creditably in defeat. Lightly raced and remains open to plenty of further progress, unlike a lot of this field. Ok draw from stall 6 and has a fantastic jockey aboard in Billy Loughnane. Somewhat progressive last year on first three handicap starts and whilst she has a long break to overcome, this filly’s runs in hotter races are much better form than most of this lot and she seems capable of taking a race at this level. Big chance if going well fresh.

Celta Vigo are traditionally a very competitive side when playing at the Balaídos, where their attacking approach and quick movement in the final third allow them to build strong momentum in front of their home supporters. They often control possession and create chances through patient build-up play combined with direct runs from wide areas. Lyon possess technical quality and experience in European fixtures, but playing away in Spain can be difficult against teams that move the ball quickly and attack with intensity. Celta’s ability to dictate the tempo of the match and create sustained pressure in the attacking third provides strong support for selecting a home victory.

Stamina is the critical variable; the 3m 1f trip on the Old Course is unrelenting, and 18 of the last 19 winners had already finished in the first two in a Grade 1 or Grade 2 chase earlier in the season. Course experience is another significant factor, with 11 of the last 12 winners having previously run at Cheltenham, and seven of those having already recorded a victory at the track.

The 2026 renewal features a competitive field of 16 runners, an unusually large turnout for a race that often attracts smaller, elite groups. Romeo Coolio is widely regarded as one of the “bankers” of the week. Having shown exceptional jumping in shorter races, however he is unknown over this trip and the fitting of the hood by the yard somewhat hinders positivity. However, his profile aligns with the “high-class novice” archetype, and his ability to stay on strongly suggests the Cheltenham hill will be an asset rather than a hindrance. Final Demand also carries strong credentials into the race. Despite social media rumors regarding his fitness, his owner has confirmed he is in peak condition, and his time-figure data from the Dublin Racing Festival places him among the elite of his division. Another potential threat is Oscars Brother, who has been consistently supported in the ante-post markets and for good reason.

Formerly the Coral Cup, the BetMGM Cup is one of the most fiercely contested handicap hurdles in the National Hunt calendar. Contested over two miles and five furlongs with 10 hurdles, it typically attracts a maximum field of 26 runners. The race is known for its unpredictability and high-speed nature, often resulting in blanket finishes and long-priced upsets. The BetMGM Cup is an outlier at the Festival because of the poor performance of favorites. In the last 22 years, only one favorite has emerged victorious (Dame De Compagnie in 2020). Instead, the race is the domain of double-digit odds; 10 of the last 17 winners started at 16/1 or bigger, with shocks as high as 50/1 being recorded in recent seasons. The most successful profile for this race is a second-season hurdler—a horse that has moved out of novice company but remains unexposed to the handicapper.

For 2026, Dan Skelton, who has mastered this race with the likes of Langer Dan, saddles Kateira, who does fit the profile of well-handicapped, classy stayer. Storm Heart is another notable contender for Willie Mullins; despite carrying a large weight, he is a tough, high-quality individual capable of producing a championship-level performance in handicap company but he faces a historical wall of statistical resistance against favorites. Jingko Blue is of interest, whose drop back in class over hurdles could be viewed as a tactical masterstroke by the Henderson team.

It is a unique spectacle, requiring horses to negotiate 32 varied obstacles that differ from the standard fences and hurdles used elsewhere on the track. After the 2024 renewal was canceled due to a waterlogged course, the race returned in 2025 and reaffirmed its status as a haven for specialists and former Grade 1 stars. The Cross Country Chase is a race where experience and course familiarity are non-negotiable. Ten of the last 11 winners were aged eight or older, reflecting the need for a mature, clever jumper to navigate the banks and ditches. Irish trainers have a vice-like grip on this event, winning 10 of the last 12 renewals. Gordon Elliott, in particular, has made the race his own, saddling six winners in the last 11 seasons.
The 2026 race is expected to be a duel between the defending champion, Stumptown, and the Elliott-trained Favori De Champdou. Stumptown was an impressive winner as the 5/2 favorite in 2025 and returns off a mark only 3lb higher. His victory in the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup in December 2025 proved his continued aptitude for the course. However, Favori De Champdou heads the challenge for Gordon Elliott, fitting the age profile (9) and class criteria required for this unique test. Other potential “spoilers” in the field include Desertmore House, a proven stayer with high-level chasing form, and Vanillier from the Cromwell yard who returns here after a win last time out at Punchestown.

The feature race of Day 2 is the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the premier two-mile championship for steeplechasers. With 13 fences to be jumped on the Old Course, it is widely regarded as the most thrilling spectacle of the week, rewarding horses that can jump at maximum speed without losing momentum. The winner of the 2026 renewal will take home approximately £225,080 from a total prize fund of £400,000. Success in the Champion Chase is almost exclusively reserved for elite Grade 1 performers. Eleven of the last 12 winners had already recorded a victory at the Grade 1 level before arriving at Cheltenham. Age is also a defining factor, with 10 of the last 12 winners aged between seven and nine. While favorites have been somewhat unreliable—winning only four of the last 12—it is rare for a true outsider to win, as 11 of the last 12 winners came from the first three in the betting.

Majborough enters the 2026 renewal as the standout from a timing perspective, having recorded a massive 179 speed figure in his Leopardstown destruction of the field. While he has been prone to jumping errors in the past, his performance in cheekpieces has solidified his status as the clear market leader. L’Eau Du Sud is probably the alternative to the favorite, with trainer Dan Skelton keeping him fresh for this target since his course and distance win in the Shloer Chase. However, I think we can avoid reading too much into this, Majborough should run out the winner, even if his price is very short.

The penultimate race of the day is the Grand Annual, the oldest race in the Festival’s history and a high-speed gallop over two miles. It is notoriously difficult to solve, as the frenetic pace often results in jumping errors and dramatic shifts in the finishing order. The Grand Annual favors horses that carry a specific weight range, typically between 10st 11lb and 11st 6lb. Historical results show that the race is unfriendly to favorites, with only two winning in the last 12 years. Most winners are aged between seven and nine, matching the physical peak required for such a fast run event. Crucially, only one of the last 12 winners won their previous race, suggesting that a horse coming off a break or an understated performance is often the one to follow.

The 2026 betting is headed by Be Aware 9/2, Jazzy Matty 11/2 and Vanderpoel at 12/1.Vanderpoel, trained by Ben Pauling, arrives on the back of easy wins at Sandown and Ascot, though history suggests that “winning form” is not necessarily a prerequisite for this race. Be Aware, who has shown marked improvement over fences and chased home the high-class Lulamba earlier in the season looks a very solid contender and may take some beating. However Calico is a notable each-way outsider at 25/1, as his recent fourth-place finish is likely stronger than it appears on paper and Calico has a good history here at Cheltenham.

Day 2 concludes with the Champion Bumper, the only race at the Festival without any obstacles. It is designed to test the flat speed and potential of young horses aged four to six, many of whom will go on to be the Grade 1 hurdlers and chasers of the future. Previous winners like Cue Card, Envoi Allen, and Champagne Fever serve as a testament to the race’s status as a nursery for future legends. Willie Mullins has an unrivaled record in this race, having won it 14 times since its inception in 1992. However, he often saddles multiple runners, and the market frequently struggles to identify the correct one; five of his previous winners started at odds of 11/1 or higher, including two at 25/1. A non-negotiable trend for the Bumper is current form: every winner in the last 15 years won their final race before arriving at Cheltenham.

Love Sign d’Aunou is the current favorite at 4/1, leading a strong battalion for Willie Mullins. However, the most intriguing runner may be Quiryn, a four-year-old with a largely flat pedigree who won with immense ease on debut at Naas. While four-year-olds have an historically poor record, Paul Townend has noted that Quiryn is not a raw jumping type and should be treated as a classy exception to the rule. Gordon Elliott’s challenge is led by Keep Him Company, who won with considerable authority at Leopardstown and is a strong candidate. Elliott also saddles Broadway Ted, a 16/1 each-way option who has already secured a victory in a Graded bumper, matching another key historical trend.

15 career runs without a win is hardly a statistic to boast about but there’s a couple of key positives today which make Tuscan Point a little bit of a dark horse at 12/1. Firstly this is not a strong race, it’s wide open for the taking. Tuscan Point has changed hands since lto and this represents first run for the Kirby yard. Stable changes can spark improvement and so a chance is taken on this four year old. Has a fantastic draw from stall 3 and Kirby’s have opted for an apprentice today in Taryn Langley who takes off 5lb with her apprentice allowance making Tuscan Point’s mark very interesting indeed. Change of headgear also reached for by the yard. Does need to find a little extra from what we’ve seen but today’s race looks an opportunity for Tuscan Point and with good positioning at the break, could run on strongly today off this weight. Chance.

Small 5 runner race here in the 6.30 at Newcastle and the one who looks the obvious answer is four year old Burke trained Party Bear. Won at Lingfield in January over this trip off a mark of 70. Slightly disappointing over C&D two starts ago on first run off 73 but improved very nicely in a much warmer class 3 lto at Lingfield when third of eleven. Back to the calmer class 5 company today and looks a major player back in this sphere. Draw not overly relevant in a small field and we are likely to see Party Bear take up his usual prominent position. Will take some pegging back and if given an uncontested lead could run away with it. Yard and jockey both have brilliant records here and Party Bear looks every bit the winner in waiting today.

One of the very few horses in this field that’s consistent and reliable with form of 12321. Versatile six year old who’s capable on both flat and over the obstacles and after two runs on the flat recently returns to hurdles here today. Decent course form including a second here back in October over this trip. Remains on a very workable mark and looks a cut above this lot today. Represents a shrewd and successful yard and has a good jockey aboard in Thomas Bellamy. Unlikely to be far away at all and looks a very likely winner at a course he enjoys and on ground that is ideally suited.

Pretty open looking Brown Advisory with the seven year old Romeo Coolio heading the market at 2/1. Far too short in my opinion for a horse not particularly suited to this trip and fitted with a hood. However, that means nice prices elsewhere and one who takes the fancy is six year old Kaid D’authie from the Muillins yard. Has all the attributes of a Brown Advisory winner with a good engine and fluid jumping. Has taken to chasing like a duck to water and is two wins and a second in this sphere. Pulled up over hurdles here 12 months ago but looks a prime candidate for the win today. Trip is a little unknown, but on pedigree and from what we’ve seen should suit and represents a top yard with a great record at the Festival and has Mark Walsh aboard who knows how to win here too, did so yesterday also. Big chance.

Failed to build on his win on handicap debut last June at Lingfield but has not been disgraced in defeat since and has been lightly raced with only three runs since. Returns from a break here and is capable of going well fresh and is on what looks to be a very workable mark. Has a wide draw but not overly concerning in a 2 mile race and has plenty of time to get positioned for the break. Makes AW and stable debut today which could spark further improvement. Good jockey aboard in Callum Rodriguez who is no stranger to course success and this race is not a strong one. Leading contender and likely winner.

Four year old Rockin’ The Boat might be winless, but this is by far and away the easiest race she’s ran in and looks pretty dangerous here on AW debut. Has contested some warm Class 2 maidens previously and ran more than creditably in defeat. Lightly raced and remains open to plenty of further progress, unlike a lot of this field. Ok draw from stall 6 and has a fantastic jockey aboard in Billy Loughnane. Somewhat progressive last year on first three handicap starts and whilst she has a long break to overcome, this filly’s runs in hotter races are much better form than most of this lot and she seems capable of taking a race at this level. Big chance if going well fresh.

Seven-year-olds have an exceptional record, winning 16 of the last 19 runnings. Stamina is the critical variable; the 3m 1f trip on the Old Course is unrelenting, and 18 of the last 19 winners had already finished in the first two in a Grade 1 or Grade 2 chase earlier in the season. Course experience is another significant factor, with 11 of the last 12 winners having previously run at Cheltenham, and seven of those having already recorded a victory at the track.

The 2026 renewal features a competitive field of 16 runners, an unusually large turnout for a race that often attracts smaller, elite groups. Romeo Coolio is widely regarded as one of the “bankers” of the week. Having shown exceptional jumping in shorter races, however he is unknown over this trip and the fitting of the hood by the yard somewhat hinders positivity. However, his profile aligns with the “high-class novice” archetype, and his ability to stay on strongly suggests the Cheltenham hill will be an asset rather than a hindrance. Final Demand also carries strong credentials into the race. Despite social media rumors regarding his fitness, his owner has confirmed he is in peak condition, and his time-figure data from the Dublin Racing Festival places him among the elite of his division. Another potential threat is Oscars Brother, who has been consistently supported in the ante-post markets and for good reason.

Formerly the Coral Cup, the BetMGM Cup is one of the most fiercely contested handicap hurdles in the National Hunt calendar. Contested over two miles and five furlongs with 10 hurdles, it typically attracts a maximum field of 26 runners. The race is known for its unpredictability and high-speed nature, often resulting in blanket finishes and long-priced upsets. The BetMGM Cup is an outlier at the Festival because of the poor performance of favorites. In the last 22 years, only one favorite has emerged victorious (Dame De Compagnie in 2020). Instead, the race is the domain of double-digit odds; 10 of the last 17 winners started at 16/1 or bigger, with shocks as high as 50/1 being recorded in recent seasons. The most successful profile for this race is a second-season hurdler—a horse that has moved out of novice company but remains unexposed to the handicapper.

For 2026, Dan Skelton, who has mastered this race with the likes of Langer Dan, saddles Kateira, who does fit the profile of well-handicapped, classy stayer. Storm Heart is another notable contender for Willie Mullins; despite carrying a large weight, he is a tough, high-quality individual capable of producing a championship-level performance in handicap company but he faces a historical wall of statistical resistance against favorites. Jingko Blue is of interest, whose drop back in class over hurdles could be viewed as a tactical masterstroke by the Henderson team.

It is a unique spectacle, requiring horses to negotiate 32 varied obstacles that differ from the standard fences and hurdles used elsewhere on the track. After the 2024 renewal was canceled due to a waterlogged course, the race returned in 2025 and reaffirmed its status as a haven for specialists and former Grade 1 stars. The Cross Country Chase is a race where experience and course familiarity are non-negotiable. Ten of the last 11 winners were aged eight or older, reflecting the need for a mature, clever jumper to navigate the banks and ditches. Irish trainers have a vice-like grip on this event, winning 10 of the last 12 renewals. Gordon Elliott, in particular, has made the race his own, saddling six winners in the last 11 seasons.
The 2026 race is expected to be a duel between the defending champion, Stumptown, and the Elliott-trained Favori De Champdou. Stumptown was an impressive winner as the 5/2 favorite in 2025 and returns off a mark only 3lb higher. His victory in the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup in December 2025 proved his continued aptitude for the course. However, Favori De Champdou heads the challenge for Gordon Elliott, fitting the age profile (9) and class criteria required for this unique test. Other potential “spoilers” in the field include Desertmore House, a proven stayer with high-level chasing form, and Vanillier from the Cromwell yard who returns here after a win last time out at Punchestown.

The feature race of Day 2 is the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the premier two-mile championship for steeplechasers. With 13 fences to be jumped on the Old Course, it is widely regarded as the most thrilling spectacle of the week, rewarding horses that can jump at maximum speed without losing momentum. The winner of the 2026 renewal will take home approximately £225,080 from a total prize fund of £400,000. Success in the Champion Chase is almost exclusively reserved for elite Grade 1 performers. Eleven of the last 12 winners had already recorded a victory at the Grade 1 level before arriving at Cheltenham. Age is also a defining factor, with 10 of the last 12 winners aged between seven and nine. While favorites have been somewhat unreliable—winning only four of the last 12—it is rare for a true outsider to win, as 11 of the last 12 winners came from the first three in the betting.

Majborough enters the 2026 renewal as the standout from a timing perspective, having recorded a massive 179 speed figure in his Leopardstown destruction of the field. While he has been prone to jumping errors in the past, his performance in cheekpieces has solidified his status as the clear market leader. L’Eau Du Sud is probably the alternative to the favorite, with trainer Dan Skelton keeping him fresh for this target since his course and distance win in the Shloer Chase. However, I think we can avoid reading too much into this, Majborough should run out the winner, even if his price is very short.

The penultimate race of the day is the Grand Annual, the oldest race in the Festival’s history and a high-speed gallop over two miles. It is notoriously difficult to solve, as the frenetic pace often results in jumping errors and dramatic shifts in the finishing order. The Grand Annual favors horses that carry a specific weight range, typically between 10st 11lb and 11st 6lb. Historical results show that the race is unfriendly to favorites, with only two winning in the last 12 years. Most winners are aged between seven and nine, matching the physical peak required for such a fast run event. Crucially, only one of the last 12 winners won their previous race, suggesting that a horse coming off a break or an understated performance is often the one to follow.

The 2026 betting is headed by Be Aware 9/2, Jazzy Matty 11/2 and Vanderpoel at 12/1.Vanderpoel, trained by Ben Pauling, arrives on the back of easy wins at Sandown and Ascot, though history suggests that “winning form” is not necessarily a prerequisite for this race. Be Aware, who has shown marked improvement over fences and chased home the high-class Lulamba earlier in the season looks a very solid contender and may take some beating. However Calico is a notable each-way outsider at 25/1, as his recent fourth-place finish is likely stronger than it appears on paper and Calico has a good history here at Cheltenham.

Day 2 concludes with the Champion Bumper, the only race at the Festival without any obstacles. It is designed to test the flat speed and potential of young horses aged four to six, many of whom will go on to be the Grade 1 hurdlers and chasers of the future. Previous winners like Cue Card, Envoi Allen, and Champagne Fever serve as a testament to the race’s status as a nursery for future legends. Willie Mullins has an unrivaled record in this race, having won it 14 times since its inception in 1992. However, he often saddles multiple runners, and the market frequently struggles to identify the correct one; five of his previous winners started at odds of 11/1 or higher, including two at 25/1. A non-negotiable trend for the Bumper is current form: every winner in the last 15 years won their final race before arriving at Cheltenham.

Love Sign d’Aunou is the current favorite at 4/1, leading a strong battalion for Willie Mullins. However, the most intriguing runner may be Quiryn, a four-year-old with a largely flat pedigree who won with immense ease on debut at Naas. While four-year-olds have an historically poor record, Paul Townend has noted that Quiryn is not a raw jumping type and should be treated as a classy exception to the rule. Gordon Elliott’s challenge is led by Keep Him Company, who won with considerable authority at Leopardstown and is a strong candidate. Elliott also saddles Broadway Ted, a 16/1 each-way option who has already secured a victory in a Graded bumper, matching another key historical trend.

15 career runs without a win is hardly a statistic to boast about but there’s a couple of key positives today which make Tuscan Point a little bit of a dark horse at 12/1. Firstly this is not a strong race, it’s wide open for the taking. Tuscan Point has changed hands since lto and this represents first run for the Kirby yard. Stable changes can spark improvement and so a chance is taken on this four year old. Has a fantastic draw from stall 3 and Kirby’s have opted for an apprentice today in Taryn Langley who takes off 5lb with her apprentice allowance making Tuscan Point’s mark very interesting indeed. Change of headgear also reached for by the yard. Does need to find a little extra from what we’ve seen but today’s race looks an opportunity for Tuscan Point and with good positioning at the break, could run on strongly today off this weight. Chance.

Small 5 runner race here in the 6.30 at Newcastle and the one who looks the obvious answer is four year old Burke trained Party Bear. Won at Lingfield in January over this trip off a mark of 70. Slightly disappointing over C&D two starts ago on first run off 73 but improved very nicely in a much warmer class 3 lto at Lingfield when third of eleven. Back to the calmer class 5 company today and looks a major player back in this sphere. Draw not overly relevant in a small field and we are likely to see Party Bear take up his usual prominent position. Will take some pegging back and if given an uncontested lead could run away with it. Yard and jockey both have brilliant records here and Party Bear looks every bit the winner in waiting today.

One of the very few horses in this field that’s consistent and reliable with form of 12321. Versatile six year old who’s capable on both flat and over the obstacles and after two runs on the flat recently returns to hurdles here today. Decent course form including a second here back in October over this trip. Remains on a very workable mark and looks a cut above this lot today. Represents a shrewd and successful yard and has a good jockey aboard in Thomas Bellamy. Unlikely to be far away at all and looks a very likely winner at a course he enjoys and on ground that is ideally suited.

Pretty open looking Brown Advisory with the seven year old Romeo Coolio heading the market at 2/1. Far too short in my opinion for a horse not particularly suited to this trip and fitted with a hood. However, that means nice prices elsewhere and one who takes the fancy is six year old Kaid D’authie from the Muillins yard. Has all the attributes of a Brown Advisory winner with a good engine and fluid jumping. Has taken to chasing like a duck to water and is two wins and a second in this sphere. Pulled up over hurdles here 12 months ago but looks a prime candidate for the win today. Trip is a little unknown, but on pedigree and from what we’ve seen should suit and represents a top yard with a great record at the Festival and has Mark Walsh aboard who knows how to win here too, did so yesterday also. Big chance.

Failed to build on his win on handicap debut last June at Lingfield but has not been disgraced in defeat since and has been lightly raced with only three runs since. Returns from a break here and is capable of going well fresh and is on what looks to be a very workable mark. Ok draw from stall 6 and has a fantastic jockey aboard in Billy Loughnane. Somewhat progressive last year on first three handicap starts and whilst she has a long break to overcome, this filly’s runs in hotter races are much better form than most of this lot and she seems capable of taking a race at this level.
