The 2024 Spanish GP:

The 2024 Monaco GP saw Max Verstappen continue his early dominance with a fine display, winning the 2024 iteration by 2.2 seconds to McLarens Lando Norris. Lewis Hamilton a respectable 3rd with the Mercedes showing life, despite being 18 seconds off the lead at the end.

However, it wasn’t clean sailing for Verstappen who lined up on the grid in 2nd position, following qualifying in which the top 2 were separated by just 0.00.018. Verstappen got the better launch of the line and attacked Lando down the inside on the straight before a quite remarkable move from George Russell around the outside of both cars, allowed the Brit to lead on the first lap, ahead of the 2 championship competitors. This lead was short lived, with Russell being caught by Verstappen on Lap 3, overtaking the Brit with a similar move before he drove off into the distance. Despite the small gap at the end, Verstappen managed this race perfectly and was never under any real pressure.

This became a bit of a theme for Lando through the 2024 season, having taken pole position but not being able to convert that to an opening lap lead, something which he has needed to improve on throughout the 2025 campaign.

The 2025 Season so far:

Following a disappointing Monaco Grand Prix (for the spectators), Barcelona should bring a bit more opportunity. A long straight, 2 DRS areas and plenty of places to overtake. The McLarens are now only separated by a few points and despite a good showing from Ferrari at Monaco, I cant see them challenging the raw pace of the McLarens here. They still look, head and shoulders above the rest currently.

Considerations:

Barcelona provide much more of an opportunity to overtake than some tracks, with the layout even being changed a few years back to encourage more wheel to wheel action. However, Spain is a track that can expose the differences between those who have a fast car and those who dont, with large gaps often between drivers come the end of the race.

The raw pace of the McLarens is also a consideration, coupled with the form of Piastri in months previous and Norris following an incredible drive at Monaco.

The local boys are often worth considering here, with it being Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz’ home race. An Aston Martin that has shown potential to score points (in Alonso’s hands) and a Williams that has been a consistent top 10 performer

Tipman Prediction:

Formula 1 is often about 3 things. Confidence, car and momentum. The best car is McLaren, the momentum off the last race is with Lando Norris and the confidence is definitely back after his display at Monaco. As such, Tipman will be backing Lando Norris to win the Grand Prix.

An outside bet we also like is Fernando Alonso for a Top 10 finish with the spaniard recognising he is driving incredibly well, he has just not had the luck go for him, shown with a points finish ruined by his engine blowing up.

Predictions:

  • Lando Norris to win the race
  • Fernando Alonso for a points finish
