Jamal Musiala:
This selection in the bookies market is dictated by their opening match performance where they demolished Auckland 10-0 and quite honestly, didn’t get out of 2nd gear.
Musiala did not start the match but came on and made an instant impact with his natural ability shining against the part-time outfit. A hat-trick in this match has already put him to the top of the charts, dropping his odds dramatically and with a favourable run already looking in place for Bayern, it would be no shock to see him rack up a few more goals and get into an unassailable lead in the goalscorer charts. The only drawback of his in this market is just the natural talent within the Bayern squad and game time that he may receive. He is a natural starter in the regular Bundesliga season, but as this Club World Cup is different, we could see non-starts, early subs or limited minutes in performance.
Erling Haaland:
A similar priced selection to Musiala is Erling Haaland. What more needs to be said about Erling? One of the most clinical finishers in this generation of strikers, who is now supplemented by a bunch of new toys in the Manchester City team. Rayan Cherki will be looking to be the new creative force for City, with his role probably being split between him and a formless Phil Foden. Cherki’s natural ability with a reinforced midfield with the returning Rodri and the new signing of Tijjani Reijnders providing a solid base for the attacking players to do their thing.
Despite City having a down year in terms of performance, Haaland’s numbers were still high throughout the season, scoring 30 goals between the Premier League and the Champions League. With games against Wydad AC, Al Ain and Juventus, Haaland could walk away with a hat full of goals before even getting to the knockout stages. A good price considering the competition standard.
Kingsley Coman:
Another player impacted by Bayern’s initial 10-0 win is Kingsley Coman. Coman got 2 goals in the thumping win and was perhaps a surprise to start considering some of the talent Bayern have at their disposal. A lot of punters had their money on Harry Kane before the tournament but he walked away with 0 goals. Minutes would be a concern here with him being in direct competition for places with Musiala, Muller, Sane, Olise and Gnabry. But with their fixtures looking favourable, it would not be a surprise if Coman continued to pop up in the goalscoring charts.
Kylian Mbappe:
Kylian Mbappe needs no introduction to anyone, but he maybe is looking to introduce himself to his new manager, Xabi Alonso. Real Madrid’s season was underwhelming despite the addition of Mbappe to Bellingham, Vinicius JR and Rodrygo and with Ancelotti no longer at the helm, Mbappe I feel would like to make an impact for his new manager. It is yet to be seen how Madrid lineup in terms of formation and personnel, but we can be sure Mbappe will be at the heart of it. Attackers in Alonso’s systems have always done well, with Victor Boniface and Patrick Schik making a career at Leverkusen in that system. Add in Trent Alexander Arnold to this mix who could put a ball on a dime for Mbappe, it is no surprise he features so close to the top in the odds.
Michael Olise:
The 3rd of 4 Bayern players on this list, again due to their 10–0 win v Auckland. Olise has absolutely flourished in this Bayern side since his move from Crystal Palace last summer and continued this fine form onto the club world cup scene. A scorer of 2 goals in the big win, Olise showed no remorse for the part timers and has already gave himself a nice start in the goalscoring category, along with many of his teammates. A fair price, but as stated earlier is could be hindered by the competition for places in the Bayern squad alongside rest and rotation.
Harry Kane:
The final Bayern player on this list is one of the pre tournament favourites Harry Kane. If you had told any punter that Harry Kane was going to start against a bunch of part timers, play 60 minutes and not score in a 10-0 win, I don’t think many would have believed you. However, it came true and the other Bayern players in Musiala, Olise and Coman stole the thunder. With favourable fixtures for the rest of the group stages, it would be no surprise to see Kane get in on the act, but what remains to be seen is if he is already too far back to get up to speed with some of the other performers in his team.
Vinicius JR:
Vinicius JR is another that needs no introduction, but maybe is more of a curious price in this market. The rumoured formation that Alonso is going to play at Madrid is a conventional 4-3-3 which would suggest a return to the natural LW spot for Vinicius. While he always has been a LW, the introduction of Mbappe last summer who drifts left, saw more of a fluid front line with Vini sometimes ending up centrally. It is yet to be seen how this works in an Alonso system, but Madrid fans will be hopeful it shows the return to form of Vinicius who really tailed off towards the end of the season in terms of goals and assists.
Serhou Guirassy:
Guirassy is a name that a lot of fans might not be as familiar with, naturally with a lot of Bundesliga attention going onto Bayern and their main striker, Harry Kane. Guirassy leads the line for Dortmund and while not being successful overall as a team, he still managed to net 21 goals in 30 Bundesliga matches. A big powerful pacy striker, he could run riot against some of the lesser teams in this competition and with Dortmund due to face their toughest game of the groups against Fluminense in the opening game, you would fancy Guirassy (providing he gets sufficient minutes) to grab a few goals against Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan in their remaining 2 group stage games. A larger price, but with the competition and group being easier, he could quite easily establish himself up the front.
Ousmane Dembele:
One of the favourites for the Ballon D’or following his domestic and European success this season, Dembele represents an outside price for the goalscorer market. Dembele was an unused sub in their opening game against Atletico Madrid in which the european champs were 3-0 winners. Dembele has been suffering with a hamstring injury and it is something to keep an eye on as it may limit his participation during the full tournament. However, if he does play, he will for sure be a part of that unbelievably fluid front line which has caused teams problems all over Europe, let alone Botafogo and Seattle Sounders.
Lautaru Martinez:
I feel this price on the market is again a reflection of the group stage fixtures they will face, rather than their overall contribution to the tournament. There is no doubt that Martinez is the main man when it comes to Inter Milan and how they play. He is integral to almost every single goal they score. However, the performance in the Champions league final showed the true version of Inter, they are an aging side who are going to have to rebuild key areas of their squad to be able to compete again, after back to back european finals. However, in terms of this competition they face River Plate, Monterrey and Urawa Reds. All good sides in their own right, but the levels are steep to reach Inter. As such, should he play large minutes he should find himself on the scoresheet. Is that enough to catch up to the front runners? I’m not to sure.
Why we're backing Cole Palmer 💭
Cole Palmer – Tipman Selection:
A bit of a sleeper pick at 33/1, Palmer is one to watch closely. Although his goalscoring dipped in the latter half of the season, his overall performances remained impressive. He earned man of the match honors in the Europa Conference League final with a commanding display against Real Betis. With confidence high and less pressure on him, Palmer could capitalize against some of the weaker defenses in the tournament and become a serious threat on the scoresheet.
