The Matchup:

The 2025 League 1 Playoff Final is going to be played between 4th Place finishers Charlton Athletic and 6th place Leyton Orient in an all London tie at Wembley. 

Charlton’s league campaign could almost be split into 2 halves. The 1st half of the season, they were a real mixed bag of results, opening up the season with 4 wins in 6 games which was subsequently followed by a bad run of results with just 1 win in 7 games. This was manager Nathan Jones’ first full season at the Valley and question marks started to be raised after this bad run of results.

Large inconsistencies remained all the way up to mid-January where a string of 5 wins in 6 games propelled the club in the right direction, showing signs of the team we knew they were capable of being. This was the late theme of the season, picking up multiple ¾ game stretches with wins on the bounce to get them into the playoffs and finish on a points total of 85, only missing out on automatic promotion Wrexham by 7 points. 

Leyton Orient on the other hand are somewhat of a surprise package this season. The O’s started the season losing their opening 4 league games, scoring just 2 goals in the process.

This largely inconsistent form lasted until late November where Orient went on a run of games, producing good results in not only the league, but the FA Cup and EFL Trophy. Their FA cup exploits got them a glamour tie as Manchester City went to Brisbane Road and narrowly defeated the O’s 2-1.

However, Orient were able to show some of the individual quality they possess with an amazing goal (yes, we’re giving it to him) by Tottenham loanee Jamie Donley. 3 league wins, followed by 5 straight losses, followed by 6 wins in their last 7 just about sums up the rollercoaster of a season, landing them 6th place, knocking out 3rd Place Stockport County on penalties in the playoff semi’s. On loan QPR man Charlie Kelman is the man to watch for the O’s. 

Head to Heads this season: 

Charlton and Leyton Orient have played 3 times this past season. Charlton coming out the better in the league campaign, 1-0 and 1-2 winners on both occasions. Leyton Orient pulled out a winner in the EFL Trophy, 2-0, admittedly with 2 very heavily rotated teams, so not too much to go on there.

The main story to pull from the 2 league games however is the late injury time goals. In Charlton’s 2-1 win over Orient, they scored in the 92nd and 97th minute to claim the win.

In the early season 1-0 win, they also scored a 92nd minute winner. Could a late goal be crucial in this massive game?
